Date: December 17, 2010 02:16AM we have white and yellow yams here sold in the local markets. We also have cassava/yucca root and malanaga. Are any of these edible raw? Re: yams: white and yellow, cassava/yucca, malanga

Date: December 17, 2010 02:49PM Cassava/yucca contains cyanide, it's not recommended raw. Fermenting and cooking remove the toxin.
Sweet potatoes can be eaten raw, but some don't like them it because they are supposed to have some antinutrients. True yams are poisonous. (Jewel and garnet yams are really sweet potatoes). I don't know if malanga can be eaten raw, but malanga is often confused with taro, which should should never be consumed raw. Best to avoid it if you have even the slightest doubt. Please be careful if you are considering raw tubers. The names are used very loosely and sometimes confused. This could be a costly mistake. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
