Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Date: July 21, 2011 09:57PM Synergy & some of those are my favorites. But sometimes I don't get to all of them before they expire & when past the expire date they have a real strong beer/vinegar/other taste.
Does anyone know if they are considered safe to drink at that point? Other than the off taste... Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Date: July 21, 2011 10:03PM I think the alcohol content goes up and there may be just as much bad bacteria as good at a certain point but if you don't mind the taste and have a strong digestive system and no negative reaction it might be ok. ~If it uplifts and inspires you, do it.~ Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Date: July 22, 2011 11:53AM Yeah, I know about the alcohol content going up, but I wasn't sure about the bad bacteria - good or bad to consume. I never experienced any negative reactions that I am aware of. Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Anyone have any hard evidence on the bad bacteria point? Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Date: July 24, 2011 12:28PM Hippocrates did some studies of rejuvelac that showed these results, that's why they no longer recommend it. I heard Brian Clement speak a few years ago and he talked about it but you might be able to get info from the centre. ~If it uplifts and inspires you, do it.~ Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

I believe that's where Brian Clement had a falling-out with Ann Wigmore in the 1980's. He wanted to discontinue using Rejuvelac, and she didn't. They still use Rejuvelac at the Ann Wigmore Institute in Puerto Rico, and teach its benefits. Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Date: July 24, 2011 02:54PM I am privy to some of the details of that "falling out", having read her personal correspondence. Also, there was a friend of theirs on here a couple years back who posted some information. They had a difference of opinion on how to run the business and parted ways, it was not amicable but, IMHO, not nearly as bad as it is sometimes made out to have been. It was not over rejuvelac though, more about everything. ~If it uplifts and inspires you, do it.~ Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?

Date: August 01, 2011 03:42PM I make my own Kombucha from SCOBY mushrooms. The longer it sits the more potent the bacteria become. I will ferment up to 30-40 days. In making your own Kombucha your supposed to not drink it if it no longer has a slight vinegar smell. I think your safe to drink expired commercial Kombucha as I believe the process has been already altered to slow fermentation. You'll end up with a more bitter/effervescent taste/vinegar taste once the bacteria eats up all the sugar. Just my two cents...I'd drink it. Re: Can I drink expired kombucha tea?
