Cheap and easy Berkey water filter hack.

Date: April 12, 2012 11:45PM I love it when people make their own stuff. You still need to buy a set of filters and they're about $100 but that filters 3000 litres of water so hey, not too shabby. You'd save about $150 plus shipping on the fancy stainless steel canisters.

Date: April 13, 2012 02:53AM Thats a massive saving Coco, great stuff. In another life, I used to own slow combustion stove (rayburn). It ran 24/7, and I used to supply the timber from my own property (16 acres of virgin Australian bush). I didn't mind the work of collecting timber, sharpening chain saws etc., I enjoyed it. We had 80 gallons of hot water running off that stove, and I had it rigged so that I could utilise the thermosyphon principle which heated the whole house in winter. In summer, I directed the hot air out of large windows above the stove.
It's my aim to have that all again, minus a few things though haha.  Re: Cheap and easy Berkey water filter hack.

Date: April 13, 2012 02:26PM Coco, that was very cool. Thanks. Only thing is that I wouldn't know how to cut it. He mentioned a jigsaw; don't have one. Plus, I like the stainless steel! Date: April 13, 2012 02:34PM I bought a scratch and dent model (you'd need a magnifying glass to find the dent though) for less than that. Pretty cool.
The ceramic filters I've been seeing look a bit more sturdy than the Berkey filters. Not sure if they work as well but they look like a pretty good bet anyhow. Might be worth it to whip up a spare for camping, extra water, whatever. I'd cut it with a carpet knife, the dremel, sawzall, whatever. Scissors. Date: April 13, 2012 07:48PM Yeah Coco, free hot water. In a temperate clime, I've known people to coil heaps of black plactic pipe up in the roof which heats up during the day and has plenty of hot water for showers etc each day, that's also cool Coco  Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
