a good source of wheatberries???
Posted by: Anonymous User ()

I have been juicing wheatgrass now for eight years...Mostly using one supplier..However, the last batch grows only 4 inches tall, whereas the previous batches were approx. eight inches. Also, they no longer have the organic available.. Would like to know of a good source to buy in 40-50 pound bags. Thanks.

The best wheat berries I've ever bought, and am now using, come from:
They were talking about going out of business, so I bought 50 pounds on my last order. Their wheat grows a nice wide, green blade of grass. I'd like to buy a couple of hundred pounds of their seed but have no place to store it....WY

I followed suggestion and placed order with Crystal Organics on June 26,2007 for six gallons. I never received them. Finally, after several phone calls to them, I was advised that they were out of them, and it sounded as though it was not just temporary.
So, I'm still looking for a good source of wheatberries!!
Help would be appreciated.... Thanks....

Yeh...Crystal Organics has been talking about quitting for years. I Hate it because it was my 'Source'.

La_Ver....Could you be a little more specific about the Wheatgrass Diva? I'd like to find out where she buys her Wheat Berries......WY

This is probably a stupid question, but could I sprout the organic wheat I buy to grind into flour for my family's bread? I buy 50+ lbs at a time, so that would sure be convenient...

I buy mine from WholeFoods. It works, but I should get a better source as well.

I've never liked buying from a source that sells in one-pound bags. Best to go directly to the Organic Farmer, if possible, and buy in Bulk.
I'll do some research today and report back.......WY
P.S. By the way, Happyvegan, your wheat berries should sprout just fine. I used to grind flour and bake bread. Those were the GOD (good ole days).

This one looks good. I'm going to order some to 'see'.
I've read that Hard Red Winter is the best wheat to buy because it's been in the ground about twice as long as the Hard Red Spring....absorbing more minerals. That's the 'Theory' anyway......WY
[www.wheatmontana.com]
P.S. It's not Certified Organic, but their explanation on the Home Page convinced me to buy.

I've bought my last 3 batches (approx 50 lbs each) from wheatmontana.com and had excellent results. I grew a nice 8 inch stalk. However, my last batch, of which I am still planting and using will only grow about 4 inches high. Not really acceptable.

The Sproutpeople.com is a middleman when it comes to wheat berries. They sell their seed for $3.45/lb. Go to the farmer (WheatMontana.com) direct and the price is under 50 cents per pound. I always found it amusing, when I bought seed at Crystal Organics, that the shipping charges were about double the cost of the very reasonable seed price.

Samgordon....Keep us informed about the seed that's growing a short blade of grass for you. I'm going to place an order soon with WheatMontana. Do you ever store your wheat berries in the freezer?.......WY

Samgordon......I got shorter Grass this batch and think it was because I 'crowded' the seed. You had mentioned, in your first post, that your's was growing only 4" tall. I'm using 1/4 less seed, now, as an experiment.....WY
