I recommend the latest book by Ani Phyo. It retails for $30 but Ani is good at keeping it pretty simple, I have found. I have her first book and this one is really thorough. It has info for making fermented products, too, along with kefir stuff. I checked it out from the library and it's on my short list of books to buy when I get some extra money for a nice booksmiling smiley

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

The recipe books are OK, but there are so many free resources on the internet. I checked out a couple of raw books at my local library, but found there are better (and simpler) versions of what they had there for free if you check out other people's blogs and some of the other forums.

This idea came from a suggestion Paul (pborst) had for a green smoothie. It's very light and refreshing.

Lettuce Pear Smoothie

- 1 pear (overripe)
- 4 leaves of romaine
- 1/2 lemon, juiced
- 2 cups of water

Peel and core pear. Place in a blender and mix along with other ingredients. Enjoy!

Orange Parfait

Fruit:
- 3 large oranges
- 1 tsp. grated ginger

Topping:
- 2/3 cup soaked almonds
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup water

Peel and segment oranges. Place in a medium sized bowl with ginger. Stir and let sit.

Drain soaked almonds. Add to blender along with vanilla and 1/4 cup water. Blend until creamy. Add more water a tablespoon at a time if the mixture is too thick.

In two glasses of your choosing, divide half of the fruit between the two glasses. Then layer half of the topping on the fruit. Then layer the rest of the fruit and then the rest of the almond topping.

Note: I left the almond skins on, but you could also rub them off after soaking for a lighter/smoother whipped topping.

Red Bliss Smoothie

- 1/2 cup cranberries
- 1/2 pomegranate
- 1 banana
- 1 orange, juiced
- 1/2 cup water

Break the pomegranate in half, hold it over the blender, and whack the back of it with a wooden spoon to release the seeds. Add the peeled banana, water, cranberries, and orange juice to the blender. Blend until smooth.

wow, that pear one sounds amazing! I think for my own taste though, id only use like a teaspoon of lemon, plus adding a small amount of honeydew to it would be pretty awesome too...mmmmm but wow, I never actually thought of using a pear in a smoothie b4 since I just love eating them so much...

Veghunter: I am intrigued with the red bliss smoothie. I wonder what it would be like to freeze the banana and use the whole orange?

Yeah, Curator, Paul had a good idea with that one.

Bananawho: I think the frozen banana sounds delicious. The whole orange might be too much as the drink is heavy with pulp because of the pomegranate seeds and cranberry skins, but you could try it. Let us know how it works if you do. smiling smiley

Delicious. It could also be watered down for a lighter drink.

Citrus Punch

- 1 grapefruit
- 3 oranges
- 1 lime

Segment 1 grapefruit and 2 oranges and place in blender. Squeeze the juice of 1 orange and 1 lime into blender. Mix until well blended.

For added kick you can try adding a touch of ginger or mint.

@rocket, It is seriously awesome the first time you whack the back of a Pom with a wooden spoon...they pop out like magic...its amazing, lol. you need a LARGE bowl to do this though to reduce the possibility of a giant mess...

This is, of course, Dr. Ann Wigmore's creation. You can see her explain how she used to do it here: [www.youtube.com]

Fermented Wheat (Rejuvelac)

- 1 cup wheat berries (soft/summer are preferred, but red/winter work fine too)
- 2-3 cups water

Rinse wheat berries under water. Place drained wheat berries in a 1 quart (or larger jar). Add 2 to 3 cups of water. Place a wire mesh or cheese cloth over mouth of jar and let berries sit for 36 to 48 hours (until bubbly and sour), lightly swirling jar a couple of times every 6 to 8 hours. Drain water off from berries and drink. The final product should be lightly bubbly and slightly sour.

You can reuse the berries to make a second grain ferment or use the berries in a dehydrated bread or cracker recipe.

Kale Apple Salad

- 1 head kale
- 1 large apple
- 1 oz raisins (about 60)
- 14 walnut halves
- 2 tbsp. cider vinegar (optional)

Wash kale. Remove center stem and tear leaves into bite size pieces. Place torn leaves into a large bowl. Core and slice apple into very thin pieces. Add apple, raisins, walnuts, and vinegar to kale. Toss.

Banana Papaya Smoothie

- 2 large bananas
- 1.5 cups papaya
- 2 large oranges, juiced
- 1 lime, juiced
- 1 cup water (optional)

In a blender combine peeled bananas, 1.5 cups of cubed papaya (without skin), the juice of 2 oranges and 1 lime, and 1 cup water. Blend until smooth. Delicious!
