Spirulina in "Toona" Salad

I was recently given some crunchy, dried spirulina. Curious, I looked up its benefits. Nutritionally it packs a big punch:

High in protein (50-75%)
A complete protein (all essential amino acids)
Essential fatty acids

Vitamins:

B1 (thiamine)
B2 (riboflavin)
B3 (nicotinamide)
B6 (pyrodoxine)
B9 (folic acid)
C
D
A
E
(a minimal source of B12)

And minerals:

Potassium
Calcium
Chromium,
Copper
Iron
Magnesium
Manganese
Phosphorus
Selenium
Sodium
Zinc

My dilemna: I don’t like how it smells... Like rotting seaweed washed up on the beach? Like tinned dog food? Ewwww.

But, waste not - want not. Soooo...

I decided to disguise its smell in a fake tuna salad recipe. And here's my take on “toona”: Mix dried spirulina in with shredded cucumber, sunflower seeds, minced onion, diced celery, and diced red bell pepper. Stir in some lemon juice, Italian herbs, and tahini. Yummy. Great in a lettuce leaf.

I've heard that spirulina brands can have different smells and flavors. I've only tried one, and I have to say that I agree with you, I don't like it. For me, it's more the gelatinous texture than the flavor. I will have to give your recipe a try. It might help me work my way through my supply as well. Thanks for sharing. smiling smiley

You can tune a piano but you can't tune a fish! hardyharhar.

I have a little machine and some capsules to make tumeric caps, you could do that w spirulina. It's a bit of an investment to get set up but it's worth it I think.

I think you are saying that you put tumeric in capsules and that I could put spirulina in capsules too. Hmmm. That seems like a good idea. Do you know what capsules are made of? How much of "an investment" was it for you?

The machine was about $20 and vegan caps (not raw) were $20 for 1000 (they come in all kinds of sizes). It's really a neat little thing, you put the bottom part of the caps into little divots in a tray, pour the powder onto the tray and use a card to push it from one side to the other (so it falls into the caps) and then put the tops on. The kids LOVE to help smiling smiley.
You can buy spirulina already in capsules though, I would check on the price difference before buying a set up to do it yourself. For the organic turmeric it was way worth it.
