Mesquite Powder?

Is there a substitute for mesquite powder? What purpose does it serve?

It's an ingredient in Ani Phyo's fudge recipe, and Whole Foods didn't have any, nor did the clerk think they carried it. I don't have much interest in making recipes where the ingredients have to be obtained by mail!

It's a raw sweetener so you could sub it with any other type of raw sweetener.

Would agave nectar work, even though it's a liquid?

You'd probably have to alter the proportions of the dry ingredients. If you don't like the recipe, why not try a different one?

You have to add a bit of dry ingredient to balance but it all depends on how much sweetener you are using. In the fudge recipe, the ingredient that makes the whole thing become solid is probably coconut oil, right?

I wouldn't say it was a sweetener certainly not in the same way agave and such are. Mesquite is very rich in protein and provides a mealy biscuity type texture which can be helpful for raw cake and biscuit recipe.
