Ice cream w/out the machine?

Date: September 06, 2007 03:01AM Hi - I'm wondering if anyone has made any of the ice cream recipes that say to "place the ingredients in an ice cream maker and freeze according to maunfacturer's instructions...." but just placed it in the regular ol freezer instead? Would that work? I could just try it I guess. If not, can you recommend a brand for this appliance? I have no clue! Thanks in advance!

Take two large bowls, one a little smaller so it fits inside the other. Place ice and some water in the larger bowl, add salt to the ice water, place your ice cream mix in the small bowl and put that in the bowl containing ice/water/salt mix. Constantly stir the ice cream mixture until it start to thicken and freeze (you want to stir so air will be trapped in the mixture as it freezes). Once it starts to get pretty stiff, transfer it into another container or icecream tub and place in the freezer to harden. I'm guessing the smaller of the two bowls should probably be metal for best heat transfer. You might have to play around with this, but it should work (this how icecream used to be made). I brought a Cuisinart ICE-20 which I'm very happy with (even if I don't make icecream all that often). Good luck, Ian. Re: Ice cream w/out the machine?

Date: September 11, 2007 01:53PM BEST. ICE CREAM. EVER: just take frozen bananas and puree them in a blender/food processor. That's it! Depending on the strength of your machine, you don't even need to freeze it! Just blend and serve, baby. Re: Ice cream w/out the machine?

Date: September 20, 2007 09:18PM Hi Peony,
I suppose ice cream is my kryptonite as well... sigh... As Ian suggested above, the Cuisinart machine is inexpensive and works great! I ordered mine online ages ago and took advantage of some offer that included another container for free. Keep in mind that you place these containers in the freezer overnight as that's what freezes the ice cream as it spins round & round. Don't believe you'll get the same results by just placing your liquid mix in the freezer. As the Cuisinart (or any other manufacturer) spins around, air is introduced which is a big component in ice cream and how it's labeled. I'm from Texas and people around here think Blue Bell comes from the heavens. Actually, no ice cream is made with more air than Blue Bell. What a hoot! Anyway, since it's still hot here I continue to make my legendary fresh ice cream for my wife & kids. Sadly I no longer partake... Regards, David Re: Ice cream w/out the machine?

Date: September 23, 2007 03:37PM Thanks Dave! Well, I don't know if ice cream is my kryptonite, (LOL!) but once in awhile you want something more than a bowl of fruit. Plus, it's a nice thing to feed non-rawies~! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/23/2007 03:38PM by Peony. Re: Ice cream w/out the machine?
