To grow greens in a colander

Date: January 12, 2009 07:22PM I want to sprout my own green sprouts (e.g. of broccoli, radish, fenugreek, mustard, etc.) and I want to do it using a basket method (germinate seeds, put them in a small-weave basket so that the rootlets can latch on to the weave, and water twice per day). Steve Meyerowitz recommends a bamboo basket for this but I don't have one and I don't think it's necessary to spend hours looking for one. Is it likely that I'll get good yields from using a plastic colander instead of a bamboo basket?
Does anyone here grow greens using the basket method? What do you use to make your 'greenhouse' if you use a 'greenhouse' at all? Re: To grow greens in a colander

Date: January 13, 2009 10:32AM I wouldn't use a plastic colander if I didn't have to, because many plastics leach BPA, a known carcinogen. It's easy to clean, but so is bamboo. If you don't have an Asian grocery in your town, you can buy bamboo products online at lots of different stores. Here is a link to my search at amazon.com.
