Growing Wheatgrass for Dummies?

Hi Everyone,

I do NOT have a green thumb! Because I travel as often as possible when not working, I don't even have houseplants -- though I wish I did because I like them.

I would like to start growing my own wheatgrass and have no idea where to start. Is there a website with instructions for the overwhelmed and inexperienced that can get me started? Barring that, a good book?

I have sprouted things and off and on in the past. I have very little space to do this in. And very little money!

Any pointers toward step by step information would be great. Thanks!

Lee

I just noticed this topic. I'm surprised no one has responded.
If you'll GOOGLE "Youtube""Wheatgrass growing", or something like that,
you will get some good ideas.
Wheatgrass Juice is the ultimate Super Food. However, it is difficult for
someone on a high Fruit Diet to take it.....WY

WY, Why is it difficult for someone on a high fruit diet to take wheatgrass juice? I have never tried it, but would like to.

I hope you will try it. Many people get sick after taking
a shot of Wheatgrass Juice. It is very strong Medicine. Good Wheatgrass
Juice has a sweet taste. If you have a Jamba Juice, or other juice bar
nearby, try some. Let us know how you did.....WY

Try reading "The Wheatgrass Book"by Ann Wigmore. She was the pioneer of wheatgrass

Yes, wheatgrass is very sweet and also very strong medicine. I have to take the juice at night before bed or I will have a strong cleansing reaction. Instead I like to just chew on a bunch of blades throughout the day, almost like chewing grass like a farmer ha ha. This is much less wheatgrass than if juicing it.

Please try it. I think it is wonderfully healthy.

I like to take mine in the morning, on an
empty stomach, before I have anything else. Two ounces
starts the day off right. Take more for a 'wheatgrass high'....WY

Lee, if you like sprouting then something you might try is growing wheatgrass soil-less symbiotically with flax or chia. I've just tried it with flax and rye grass and the rye takes root in the gel of the wet flax seeds.

1. Soak and rinse wheat or rye seeds until they just begin to sprout.

2. Put them into a clay pot 1 layer thick.

3. Sprinkle in dry flax (or chia) seeds over the wheat and water.

4. Keep moist and pot covered until grass blades are formed.

5. Harvest as a "cake" of roots, grass and sprouts.

I never thought of that. Thanks a lot loeve! I must try. Grass with flax, chia, or even my gelatinous mustard.

Cool, faeterri. I liked your use of a clay dish for sprouting which really suits these gelatinous seeds too. Then RawLion posted the method of growing wheatgrass on a paper towel. Then I was reading that chia gel helps the seeds get established by holding water (like a sponge). The gel is essentially just fiber. I harvested one 4" pot with the grass a few inches high and the flax with long tales and it was all good. A second pot is still growing with 5" grass blades and the flax about to set leaf. It's a fun experiment for me.

These clay pots work for soil-less rye grass too. Soaked rye seed in the bottom of a damp clay pot with a clear plastic lid will grow forming its own root mat. It's ready after about 7 days roots'n all. The seed starch turns sweet. The grass keeps growing to about 7cm in 12 days but the root mat and spent seed casings can get moldy.
