vinegar on soil / plants - effects?

Date: May 07, 2012 08:42PM Hi guys, I have a question. I use vinegar to wash my dishes (very mild solution, just a little splash really, about 1 or 2 teaspoons to a bowl of water) and I've been throwing the dish water out on my plants once I've finished. (I don't like to waste water down the drain, plus the bits from the juicer etc can clog up the pipe). Is this a bad idea? Would it make the soil too acidic? Or are there some plants which would prefer this?

Date: May 07, 2012 11:16PM Vinegar has a low pH (acidic) which some plants do not like. Personally I like to throw all grey water (sinks) onto my compost pile. This works real good. Re: vinegar on soil / plants - effects?

Date: July 25, 2012 06:51PM I'd say that this depends on whether your soil is alkaline or acid to begin with. Our soil where I live is alkaline (ph = 8) so I pour diluted vinegar on my potatoes. Since I've been doing this, there is no problem, ever, with scabby potatoes or insect infestation of any kind. I suspect that some of my other crops would benefit from a more acid soil, too. Need to look into this.
So, it doesn't do any harm to get your soil tested and work from there. Since 2 months have passed since your inquiry here, how is everything doing in your garden now? Or when you spoke of your plants, did you mean houseplants? Re: vinegar on soil / plants - effects?

Sorry, I only just saw your response! I've been putting my waste water on my compost, as per vermontnl's suggestion, so I can't really report how it would have affected my soil had I been throwing it directly on it. These days I'm getting as precious over my waste water as I am about my waste food - I have a little bucket under the sink next to my mini-compost bin, into which I pour any waste water in, then out it all goes to the compost. So cool to think I can use my leftovers to enrich my garden. Crazy when I think how people just chuck this precious stuff away then go buy expensive fertilisers etc! Typical of our world though.. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
