what to do with hulls from sunny sprouts?

What do you guys do with the little translucent hulls that come off your sunflower seed sprouts? I haven't been sprouting in a while, but before I was trying to skim them off the top of some soak water and it was a major pain to get them all.

Then, I was using the sprouts directly on my salads. I still want to do that but I also want to make more recipes with them - breads, pates, etc.

Also, does anyone dehydrate their sprouts and then grind them into flour for bread & cracker recipes? I read this somewhere and wondered how that affected the nutrition and enzymes. Technically, I can't see why it would change anything - it just seems harsh to dry them and grind them up, I guess, LOL!

Thanks so much from a newbie!

I've only grown sunflower sprouts a few times, and those times I've let them grow for a couple of weeks or so until the husks fell off by themselves. I've heard that pulling them off early with your fingers can damage the plants, but if you're harvesting them it probably doesn't matter.

I usually use quicker growing sprout varieties that drop their hulls much sooner and have smaller softer hulls which need not be thoroughly separated from the sprouts. (clover, broccoli, radish etc...)

I've never dehydrated sprouts, so I can't help you there. I have blended them into smoothies, which works pretty well. If you dehydrate them, grind them, then bake them into bread they won't be nearly as healthy they were before you started, but the bread would probably still be healthier than if you'd made it with straight wheat flour.

putting your sprouts in a salad spinner will get rid of the hulls. i got mine at the thrift store after seeing one advertised on the sproutpeople.com website.

frances is right, dehydrating, grinding, even blending and juicing oxidizes fruits and veggies and makes them less nutritious. dehydrating is the "worst" of these processes, but certainly breads and crackers and other things made from dehydrated sprouts are better for you than their cooked counterparts.
