Date: March 29, 2008 12:53AM I think they're usually made from hemp canvas. I'm not sure whether that's important. It may that hemp is less likely to mold? I think most of the cost of the pre-made ones is usually for the organically grown material, which is reasonable because any weird chemicals in the fabric might end up in your sprouts - or damaging their germination. I believe that conventionally grown cotton has the world's highest use of pesticides, which is pretty creepy when that cotton is getting into your personal food supply. Maybe that's why they use hemp?
Anyway, I think I've convinced myself that the best plan is to buy a pre-made sprout bag from a source you trust unless you want to do the research and get a good food-safe, strong fabric with good drainage. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
