Here's a mostly intuitive answer if you don't mind.. when I clean up my diet I get healing symptoms like water retention and inflamation that can be be seen on the outside and are no doubt reflected on the inside. The lungs are within a membrane (pleura) which normally makes it easy to breath, but the pleura can cause pain with every breath if there is fluid or inflamation anywhere in there.. last time I felt this was when I had a bacterial ear infection which went systemic right down to my toes and made my pleura very tender several days in the process.

So maybe it's inflamation?
