Can cartilage in a knee be healed and grown back?
Posted by: Anonymous User ()

I have had an issue with my knee after recently finishing a half-marathon. I was told that I had a meniscus tear and I am going to be dealing with that with some water running.

But, I was also told that because I was bow legged that I had worn out my cartilage in my knees due to the weird angle. I had never before been told that I was bow legged but I'm sure it's likely.

So, my question is...can worn out cartilage be grown back? Has anyone done this before? If so, how?

I was speaking with a chiropractor the other day and he said that it would grow back. This is the first person who has told me that it is possible. I plan on seeing him in a professional setting after the first of the year.

What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks for any information you can share.

Hi PLA, Nice accomplishment on finishing a half-
marathon!.... I once was training for such a run and
had to stop due to knee pain.. it came on very suddenly
during a run, and forced me to stop training all-
together for about six months..

Well, "torn cartilage" and "worn out" cartilage are
two distict injuries imo, both calling for rest if not
some sort of immobilization (one runner to another)..
Cartilage that is worn completely thru can be treated, for it
to grow back sounds like it would take a change in lifestyle
at a minimum....

I've given up running for five years at a time and always
felt stronger for it, always finding satisfying alternatives....
probably not what you wanted to hear..

I'd listen to the chiropractor.

Best of luck!.. loeve

What did you find were good alternatives to running?

As mentioned above I am starting a water running program to build up the surrounding muscles in my knee(s).

I also mentioned my casual talk with a chiropractor. He stated that cycling wouldn't be good right now because of the angle and pressure on the knee. So, I was wondering what you found helpful?

Currently I am not doing any form of exercise involving the knee and trying to be careful in squatting down or any sort of angles on the knees. I will do whatever is necessary to get to the point where I can walk comfortably...let alone do any running :-)

I have just found that I need to cut back on my eating since the injury. Can't consume as many calories as before *haha*.

Thanks for your insight...much appreciated.

Well, the first six months I went about my normal everyday
routine, which was enough of a break to heal a bit.. then anything
low impact, off-pavement or non-repetitive.. cycling, swimming,
squash, racketball, nautilus circuit and stairclimbing, dance,
hiking, Taebo, stretching and floor exercises.... over the years..

The water running sounds excellent.. I've tried water aerobics, which
is a really a good workout..

Light cycling with low resistence geers would be nice if
it turns out to be an option after all.. it sounds like you
like the outdoors.. ah, walking.. my dog had me walking a lot! haha

Blessings.. loeve

I have some knowledge by experience, Okra, raw wheat, black gram, almond gum soaked in water, all can heal joint tissue faster.

I have had torn miniscus for which I have undergone surgery, but my cartilage had ruptured too, so I had stayed away from very knee moving exercises, changed my run to move from my hips rather than knee and I am feeling lot better now.

It is laughable but due to Indian family situations I am never there to consuming raw food on a daily basis but whenever I am there, I have always seen my knee loving it.

Good luck.
