Diatomaceous earth is a wonderful way to pull radionuclides from the body, internally, I try to remember to have a big swig of bentonite from time to time...

But if you are more interested in silica, you can always forage for wild horsetails (best served steamed lightly). They are apparently best to pick when young and resembling asparagus... but that's one of the highest wild sources of silica. smiling smiley

Bentonite is clay... DE is something else, no?

I do like to harvest wild edibles but they are available for limited time yearly.

DE is fossilized diatoms, shelled creatures that lived along time ago.

Horsetail i don't recommend as it does contain nicotine which is vaso-constrictive.

DE is a great way to supplement Silica, i had very good effects on my hair, skin and nails. Also an effective intestinal parasite cleanse.

Not the sort you would use in a pool as that isn't food grade smiling smiley.

I visualize DE as very small, sharp pieces, so I feel like it could cut your insides, and I don't want to ingest or breathe it. I have a mental block against it.

It has to be food grade DE if you are to consume it.

DE is actually very good for healing the stomach lining due to the silica content and is not irritating at all. But yes you do not want to breathe or inhale diatomaceous earth.

As I understand it, the particles are microscopically edged, is that not so? They would be harmful to inhale but not to ingest. I'd think crunchy toasted bread would be scratchier by far.

Did you know that you're supposed to take care not to inhale any of that mineral makeup that's so popular now? It certainly doesn't come with any warnings to that effect but it can be very damaging to the lungs. Think about it, it's powdered minerals of all sorts. Not very respiratory system friendly, that.

coco,

That mineral makeup--I use a safer one than the infomercial stuff, and I worry that the few times I have released whisps of it into the air and then taken a breath will result in a Black Lung diagnosis in twenty years! Hypochondriac, me smiling smiley

powerlifer,

At the risk of arousing anti supplement ire: couldn't one just take a silica supplement instead of ingesting ground up clam shells?

Hmm... do you suppose that this would be considered technically non-vegan even though they are fossilized clam shells (I assume this makes them as close to rocks as actual rocks...)?

What silica supplement are you thinking of Tamukha ?, the majority of silica supplements on the market are just horsetail extracts, horsetail contains nicotine which is vaso-constrictive. In general silica is very poorly absorbed you are better taking it over the day rather than all at once, which is why i DE is a preferred choice. Also that it is cheap.

powerlifer,

I'm don't really need silica myself, right now, but was asking to just learn more about it in general. This is my answer, I guess:
