Not good - this gives more power to the FDA.

There's still hope --

Senate Fails to Vote on Food-Safety Bill

[online.wsj.com]

This is causing a hold-up --

Quote

"Sen. Tom Harkin (D., Iowa) blamed the delay on the insistence of Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) that the Senate consider an amendment to ban spending earmarks. Mr. Coburn demanded that senators publicly vote on the issue of earmarks, controversial legislation that lawmakers tuck into laws to pay for pet projects."

I hate it when they attach an amendment that has nothing to do with the bill.

Thanks for keeping us posted on the actual bill, KidRaw. And as for George Soros: I have an eerie feeling I've already dealt with this on these boards before, you know, the attributing of all manner of evils[real or imagined] to one person, like he's a villain from a comic book or something. A hedge fund isn't an individual.

All they do is break the rules constantly...or make them up as they go along. As long as it can be attached as a rider I suppose it falls within the law...or the law as they see it.

Quote from the Forbes article -

...this expansion of Food and Drug Administration regulatory authority would waste billions of taxpayer dollars without making our food supply any safer.

With as many as 5,000 Americans dying every year from food-borne illnesses, consumers would obviously benefit from a safer food supply....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I am all for "Food safety", no doubt...and i surely don't want to see anyone get sick or die from food borne illnesses...

But..5,000 Americans die each year from food borne illnesses? Really? 5,000 out of a country of 307,006,550? (google result)

It's refreshing to see that our lawmakers are tackling such pressing issues that will obviously save so many lives. What a staggering number of lives saved.

I agree, I mean that same money put into taking care of the poor would save far more than 5,000 a year...far far more...

Got this email today --

We’re sorry to bombard you with emails, but time is of the essence as current negotiators on Capitol Hill hold the power to make the food safety bill law or leave it dead in the water. We wanted to give you a quick update on the Food Safety bill—or rather, the language from the bill, which Sen. Inouye included in his omnibus spending bill—but more importantly, we wanted to ask for your urgent help on this Action Alert. We are so close to victory.

A number of senators, mainly Republicans, decided to support neither the omnibus bill, which contained a lot of “pork” (funding for local projects with little or no national significance) nor the continuing resolution (CR) from the House (both of which contained the food safety bill language), but instead wanted a one-page CR that would keep the government open for the next two months.

So today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and others are crafting this short-term CR. It is unlikely that it will contain controversial provisions, because they want to bring it up under a unanimous consent agreement. If they tack on food safety, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) will oppose it, and then the CR would require a cloture vote and debate, which everyone wants to avoid at this late date. The likely scenario includes a controversy-free CR without food safety, which may be passed as early as Monday.

However, as we have seen, things change quickly on Capitol hill. There is still a possibility that food safety will be tacked onto the short-tern CR at the eleventh hour. In addition to our concerns over the food safety language, we are opposing any last-minute maneuver, any other back-room shenanigans, that might keep food safety alive.

If you wouldn’t mind, we need one more push from people like you who have been fighting this so-called “food safety” bill from the start. Please send a message to your senator TODAY, even if you’ve done so before, to reaffirm your strong opposition to the bill’s language.
