Do dental scalers cause harm?

Date: July 20, 2013 01:57AM I was just at the dentist and I was wondering if dental scalers cause harm, for example, do they damage the enamel so that there are scratches for bacteria to hide in? Also those "explorers that they stick into every nook and crany, they seem to have a lot of potential to damage.
