Yeah, I don't think the woman had Ebola, come to think of it. Seems like people close to death with Ebola are very sick and wouldn't be sitting in a beauty parlor getting their hair done. They probably wouldn't be sitting at all.

Possible Ebola case in Jefferson County, Mo.

The patient is considered "Low Risk", which means:

"Household members of an Ebola
patient and others who had brief direct
contact (e.g., shaking hands) with an
Ebola patient without appropriate PPE

OR

"Healthcare personnel in facilities with
conrmed or probable Ebola patients
who have been in the care area for a

In the fantastic BBC documentary video from a few days ago remember the baby's father who was getting better, looked good, talked to the social worker, then went to take a shower, then collapsed and died there within minutes? It was at about the 22 minute mark.

I hope coconutcream saw that video. She said she hadn't seen any currant films of people bleeding from orifices. That poor sweet 11 month old baby bleeding from his eye before he died was so heartbreaking. He was number 604 in the Ebola graveyard. Just a number on a stick to mark his grave.

Hi SueZ,

I missed that. If you have time, can you link it? I wouldn't be able to watch it for another 9 hours or so though.

I hope it resurfaces somewhere. I didn't know BBC doesn't own the stuff they show on tv. This snippet is all I've been able to find of it so far. It features the M.D. the documentary followed holding the daughter of the man who died in the shower. The adorable little girl, Warrah, was the only one in her family who survived Ebola - and she almost didn't. Her mother and sib died before they got there. Before her father died he was playing with Warrah and they were happy and laughing. You could tell they had a close relationship. It was a fantastic 45 minute documentary. Maybe BBC will play it again on tv sometime.

"Was Ebola Behind the Black Death?"

"Controversial new research suggests that contrary to the history books, the "Black Death" that devastated medieval Europe was not the bubonic plague, but rather an Ebola-like virus.

"History books have long taught the Black Death, which wiped out a quarter of Europe's population in the Middle Ages, was caused by bubonic plague, spread by infected fleas that lived on black rats. But new research in England suggests the killer was actually an Ebola-like virus transmitted directly from person to person."

Yes, this intriguing idea has been going around for a while now. I'm surprised it made it to the mainstream news. Doubt it will make it back there any longer now that Ebola has been proclaimed as an issue of national security.

"The toll in the Ebola epidemic has risen to 5,420 deaths out of 15,145 cases in eight countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday, with transmission of the deadly virus still "intense and widespread" in Sierra Leone.

"The figures, through Nov. 16, represent a jump of 243 deaths and 732 cases since those issued last Friday, and cases continue to be under-reported, the WHO said in its latest update."

HERO watch: So far, the patient in Missouri has tested negative. She is a nurse who just returned from Liberia. "She will continue to be isolated for 72 hours, and if she is still exhibiting symptoms she will be re-tested."

"In West Africa, the death of parents from the Ebola epidemic has caused a surge in orphans...

"As a sign of solidarity in the fight against Ebola, Christian pastors and Muslim imams in Sierra Leone are coordinating outreach in surprising ways...These religious leaders 'exchange pulpits' to instruct adults in each other’s congregations in effective Ebola care and prevention in the home or in a clinic. This reinforces the message that minority Christians and majority Muslims must set aside religious and cultural divisions in the community-wide effort to stop the spread of Ebola, care for orphans, and survivors."

SueZ, I finally saw the little piece of that 45-minute documentary that you posted above. I misread your post the first time around, and didn't quite get that this part was actually still available.

So here it is again, just because the little girl is so absolutely adorable:

Warrah and the baby boy with Ebola were being cared for by a 6 year old boy after her father collapsed and died in the shower. When the doctor went to check on the boy the little guy was clearly having trouble breathing and was bleeding profusely out of his right eye. He died shortly after that and his grave was marked by a stick with "604" in the graveyard that was made for 300 people. It looked like around 5 or 6 new holes were being dug at the time "604" was buried and all of the other gravesites looked freshly covered.

The doctor asked a recovered patient, who was being discharged, if she would stay on a bit until they found someone else to watch Warrah. The woman agreed to stay as she was waiting for her sister, who was also a patient, to recover.
On asking the woman who her sister was he hesitated as her sister, who he had not known was her sister, had just died, (which he discovered on camera just before he went to talk to her sister). The woman cried and decided the next day to leave instead of stay and take care of Warrah. The doctor said later he was glad to see her cry as he thought that was a healthy response. Most of the people he had to break news of their loved one's death to had no visible response, he said. These are the things that lead up to the last few minutes of the documentary which were shown in the snippet.

Well, thanks for summarizing SueZ. My gosh. It's really harder than words can express.

Thankfully, there are those very incredible people in the world who feel good about risking their lives to help. It's amazing, the range of good and bad in the world.

...Maybe a copy write on this video means it will be coming out again at some point.

Yes, I think the media will resume interest when/if it comes back to the US. There always seems to be news of some new person/persons who are being admitted in the US for symptoms. It seems to be kind of all about the US.

Regarding symptoms, this chart notes the difference between early symptoms and advanced symptoms.

Possible Advanced Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea, and sometimes (but not always) bleeding from orifices, but there are other advanced symptoms that we don't often hear about:

That last image (of the young boy), I'm guessing is not accurate. It looks more like smallpox.

The other images though are advanced Ebola symptoms.

"Number of Ebola cases nears 16,000 as Sierra Leone loses ground: WHO"

The death toll from this outbreak is now at 5,689, with most new cases coming from Sierra Leone, where fewer than 70% of cases are isolated. This means a much greater risk of exposure for family members and friends. The outbreak is expected to get worse before it gets better.

The good news according to this article is that "Peter Piot, a leading specialist on the disease, said on Wednesday that...new infections should start to decline in all affected countries by the end of the year."

I hope he's right!

The 9th MD? Wow. I never heard about the 7th and 8th! Dr. Salia was the 6th. Well, I hope this new doctor recovers!

I'm glad they found the guy in Bangkok. That could have been disastrous. What was he thinking?!

Apparently the first human trials for the Ebola vaccine were successful. Trials included 20 people, and there were no (known) side effects. Those people weren't exposed to Ebola of course, but tests show they've developed an immune response.

So, will this vaccine be distributed and mandated worldwide? No. The goal is to vaccinate only the health care workers treating Ebola patients, because health care workers are at highest risk.

"The hope is to be able to make enough vaccine to at least protect health care workers fighting the epidemic."

I won't be taking any vaccines. They say (now) only health care workers will get them so I expect a lot of the best and smartest ones taking early retirement. They will be replaced by less expensive ones. Maybe, in the US, with the 3K new incentive for hiring illegal aliens it will be just those people who hospitals will be looking to hire.

The 8th doctor in Sierra Leone to get Ebola was the doctor of the one who died once he was flown back here to the US. Might have gotten it when they were all hugging while celebrating #8's false negative test. #9 has a wife and small children.

I think if I were caring for Ebola patients, I would take the vaccine. Otherwise, I wouldn't want to. My current fast has been the most difficult and unusual fast ever, and I'm wondering if it's because of all the vaccines I had to take over the past couple of years. I had to take them all!

Here's some good news: "A 15-minute Ebola test will be trialed in West Africa"

Not only that, but it can be taken in the field because it doesn't require a cold environment, and it runs on solar. Good deal!

Ebola in first world countries generates an amazing amount of contaminated trash!

... "The group calculated that each patient treated at the Nebraska facility created about 1,010 pounds of solid waste, most of it in the form of personal protective equipment (PPE) — the hoods, face shields, suits and foot covers that doctors and nurses wear. That equipment, as well as towels and linens used for bedding, created around four to eight large bags of waste a day."...

And the liquid waste problem ...

..."But the unit’s director Philip Smith and Lowe had two concerns. In the event that the toilets backed up, potentially infectious material could flood into the patient rooms and possibly into other pipes in the hospital as well. Public health groups also wanted assurances that the waste would not be contaminating facilities outside of the hospital. So Smith decided to take extra measures by treating the toilets in the patient’s room with hospital-grade disinfectant. Normally it takes four minutes to sterilize the waste, but to be safe, all Ebola patients’ waste was held in this sterilizing solution for 2.5 times the recommended time before it was flushed."...
