What is foamed polystyrene?

I was looking at a water dish for animals that says:

"Constructed of foamed polystyrene! Does not release dangerous toxic residues into the water."

Have you ever seen those large, white Styrofoam container things (you sometimes see them at the grocery store or Lowes)? The are made from polystyrene. Its used alot to make disposable cups and plates etc.

It can be made more hard and durable by either heat or gas and from all accounts it appears to be safe as it doesn't seem to contaminate food.
