I would make almond milk (1 cup almonds, soaked then strained, then blended with 3-4 cups of water, then strained) would be a good choice to boost your protein intake.
My favorite green smoothie:
juice of 4-6 oranges
1 pear
2-3 bananas
1/2-1 bunch of greens (kale, collards, spinach, parsley)

I read that NY Times article when it came out.
Basically, the author was spending all her time in the kitchen bc she was eating only recipes, gourmet-type meals that had tons of ingredients. It was a completely unrealistic portrait of what a typical rawfooder eats.

I'm really sensitive to caffeine so I was never a regular coffee drinker, but cacao doesn't have any effect on me, go figure.
I'm not scared of it, I eat a tsp. maybe at a time with some honey and tahini and it's really good. I don't eat it every day.
I feel fine, no ill effects. YMMV.

I was very sick with asthma and did a one-month juice fast. I started researching raw foods during that time, and after I came off the fast I found that raw foods just made me feel better and kept me healthy. That was a year and a half ago. I've had some slipups, but I've been mostly raw since then.
Some people can transition gradually, some prefer cold turkey, it just depends on the person.
