Oh boy, yesterday was a big surprise for me. My son and his soccer team were going to run around the lake (about 6 km, or 3.5 miles), so all us moms decided we would "walk" around the lake at the same time for a nice exercise. But all the moms (except me) who showed up were seasoned runners, and there was no way I could keep up. I did the best I could, and I am sure I got around fa

Welcome Sinti: The raw journey is a challenging one, but oh, so worth it. I am also a mom - four teens and I know how hard it can be to juggle everyone's eating styles. All my family is pretty much SAD, although two of my daughters won't eat red meat, and then everyone has various odds and ends they won't touch (one won't eat mushrooms, another won't eat onions and so on.) I have found that

Day 2... Yikes, I am a little sore from the workout at the gym yesterday, those abdominal exercises were a bit much, but I suppose it just goes to show how much work I need to do! Yoga in the morning is interesting. I do it in my bedroom to try to avoid all the traffic of kids getting ready for school, hubby wandering around, but even that seems to be a big traffic zone. Kids walking in a

Hi Annbou: I am trying to follow the 80/10/10 program as well, but lots of days I am higher than 10% for my fat intake. From what I have been reading, that is not unusual, and at first it's ok to have some extra fats. Eventually, your body will be more able to reduce to the desired levels without a lot of cravings. Wishing you the best,

Pam: I love how you practice your gratitude like that - it reminds me to do the same. I just made arrangements to go visit my sister in October and when I told her I was coming, she was so excited that she was going to be treated to some of my fabulous salads. It's such a good feeling when somebody notices - what she thinks is amazing and spectacular is so ordinary to my family. A change

Elakti: That was the hardest part for me, was the secondary cravings (or at least that was how I thought of them). The cravings themselves weren't really as torturous as the ones at the very beginning, but it was almost as if the big concrete wall of willpower that I had to create for myself to get started had chipped away quite a bit after a while, and I had to be prepared for that. Maybe y

So, I have been hanging around the diary list for a while, and right now I have decided to take the plunge and commit myself to get fitter. I have been 100% raw for about a month, although pretty much raw for about three years. This morning, I did a very beginner yoga workout - I am hoping to do that on a regular basis. It was very surprising to me. I did yoga a few times many years ago whe

Hi Pam: I do not personally know anyone here who is a raw foodist, although there is a woman in my city who holds raw potlucks on a regular basis. There are too many scheduling conflicts for me to go, so I have never looked into it. (same night as my dragonboating and also my son's soccer) So this group is a life-saver for me - pretty much everyone who knows me thinks I have lost my mind.

I've got it Elakti: What about some really hard-core visualization. Imagine all your goals are reached - you have found a job you look forward to every day, and you enjoy the people you work with. You are completely raw, and you hair is shiny, your skin is glowing, and your body is just the way you want it to be. You don't even think about cigarettes any more, in fact, you don't even need

Hey pampam, We are practically neighbors (I live on Vancouver Island in Canada). You are so right about the weather - it's so great this week, I have been outside as much as possible (although not nearly as busy as you!), because as we know, once the weather starts changing it will be very wet and often windy, haha!! Between me and my kids we have about six different things going on this w

I am a negative person? How about "I used to be a negative person" I don't think you are a negative person pampam. I think you are a very hard working and determined person. You have done a wonderful job of staying with this raw diet in the face of criticism, and I am sure many cravings and that's no easy feat. I suspect you don't give yourself nearly enough credit. You are ama

Hi Elakti! Wow, how much we forget. I had completely forgotten that smoking was kind of entertaining (in a dysfunctional way, haha!!) Probably a good idea to try to plan some kind of alternative "entertainment" if you can think of anything you like, preferably something non-eating related. Never too soon to start creating those new good habits!! (crosswords? knitting? obsessive

Wow pampam, that is so amazing you say that about the yoga. I recently bought a yoga tape, and haven't had a chance to start using it yet. I have briefly watched a bit of it, and hope to commit myself to doing this regularly starting Monday (I'm insanely busy until then). Anyway, the DVD I bought is called "Yoga for Absolute Beginners" (good name hey?), and there are four workout

I hear you about the snacking Elakti - I remember it seemed to take forever before I got over that inclination to constantly have something in my mouth (and usually it wasn't the healthiest choice either!) I wonder if it would help to try to pre-plan other choices for yourself. I don't know what would work best for you personally, but maybe once in a while substitute a snack for a glass of wa

Haha pampam, that's us, a couple of gourmet cooking raw foodists, haha!! If you think that's bad, here's another funny story. Just after I went raw, my stove broke down and we had to buy a new one. I figured fine, let's just get the least expensive one we can find. But my husband had just finished a job where he had earned more money than we usually had. He looked at me and said that all hi

Hey pampam, Good for you sticking to it, and great for you completing that master cleanse, excellent start to a new program!! I know what you mean about getting off track so easily. I was mostly raw up and down for about three years, until about a month ago when I just suddenly realized that no cooked or non-vegan food served me any longer. It just suddenly didn't register for me mentally

One aspect of the whole chemotherapy experience that helped me get through it was the mental battle I created for myself. I would go in and get all the poisons injected into me (plus the five awful pills), and go home. It would take about three hours before I started to feel really bad, so I would have a nice breakfast and tidy up,then settle into bed for the horrible stuff. Then I would star

Elakti: I'm just about bursting, I am so proud and excited for how great you are doing. It's amazing to think of you giving yourself this wonderful gift of freedom! I remember when I first quit, I really re-discovered my sweet tooth for a while. In fact, there was one particular butterscotch candy that I ate a lot. For years, my four kids would publicly ask me to buy those "smoking&q

That is wonderful drsirius! Great job! It's a bit of a change going to 100%, but it's really worth it. I found another site for recipes that I have a lot of fun browsing through - many of the recipes come with photos, and people write in their comments, which is often very helpful. Thought I'd share that: I gave up coffee too, about a month ago. At first I was pretty miserable, but no

OMG Elakti I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!! Wait, let me say that again..... I AM SO UNBELIEVABLY PROUD OF YOU, WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. MAKE SURE YOU GET IN FRONT OF A MIRROR VERY SOON AND TELL YOURSELF YOU ARE THE MOST FABULOUS AMAZING PERSON EVER. Please, please don't beat yourself up for anything especially weight. Now that you are raw, you probably don't have anything to worry about.

Wow pampam, it must be a great feeling to have such measurable progress! I have a medical condition that causes one of my hands to swell up, and it seems to do a lot better when I am raw (and also when I exercise). Hope you have a great day!

It's pretty crazy that anyone worries much about a raw food diet, while at the same time, the SAD diet is producing unbelievable numbers of obese children. In the past week, I have read that there is a huge demand for obese young boys to undergo breast reduction surgery . And then this morning, I read that many children are experiencing obesity related liver disease and there is a huge dema

Ok Elakti - I am going to tell you off right now, in a very stern way, and I want you to take it just that way, while understanding that it comes from me with love and a whole lot of support for you. Just because I said you will succeed when you are ready doesn't mean you get to put it off. It doesn't matter how many emotional issues you think you need to deal with first, it is just excuses.

Hey Elakti Don't give up, One day you won't say "I think" this is the day, or "I will try" today. You will "KNOW" this is the day, and you will "DO IT". I never really "quit" smoking, I finally decided to NEVER put another one in my mouth. No matter what. I decided it was MY choice to make. It's really important to realize who is in

My favorite book about how to be raw: The 80/10/10 Diet by Dr. Doug Graham - you probably still have to order it on-line, but it's worth it. Best one I have found about making fast, easy meals without a lot of fuss: Raw Food Made Easy For 1 or 2 People by Jennifer Cornbleet (her recipes don't always follow the 80/10/10 format, but this is a terrific transitioning book) I also found a

It has been nearly 18 years since I quit, and I still shudder to think how hard those first few months were. It made me crazy. For me the biggest thing was to realize that I really wasn't depriving myself of something, but rather that the freedom was a gift to myself. I had to really stop looking at the next cigarette as my friend, and realize it was exactly the opposite. You are very wis
