I use terra cotta too (the saucers from flower pots) and did not have luck with flax. Some things work well, like buckwheat, wheat, lentils.... But many things cannot be accomplished like sprouting small seeds and gelatinous seeds like flax. I saw some advice to sprout these kinds of seeds on wet paper towels. That still was not workable for me. I purchased an EasyGreen sprouter and it just

David - I have been drinking green smoothies for just a few weeks now. At first I did not put in the thick stems of kale, or collards. Now I do and you'd never know it. So I say add them in! I tried pear with greens for the first time today. It was very good! (I also added some frozen peaches since it is something I am familiar with.)

Is it possible to be Dr. Jekyl AND Mr. Hyde at the exact same time??!! That is how I am feeling this week. Coming off a stint of eating cooked food was not as smooth as I thought it would be. The BIG MISTAKE was buying cookies/crackers/bread to have in my house. The Mr. Hyde in me ate it until it was gone. This is what I will have to face if I feed non-raw friends in my home and feel I shoul

There are a couple things from Green for Life that I wonder about and would love to hear some of your thoughts: 1) Victoria recommends 70 grams of fiber a day. I have looked up the fiber content of all kinds of foods, and the ones that seem to have the most are legumes, having about 9 grams per cup. Fruits and vegetables are notably less. How in the world would you get 70 grams of fiber dri

WY - I am very interested to hear about your experience with green smoothies, given the experience you have with juicing. That will be a nice comparison. --lovebird

Hi Mario - Nice to hear from you! I hope you find some good ways to make eating raw a little easier. I am finding that smoothies really simplify things. There is less food prep involved. Also, I just joined a raw foods meetup group and the young guys in the group really like superfoods. They call it the 'real' fast food. It sounds like it is an assortment of powders that are chock-full of nu

Hi WY! I also wanted to mention how drinking green smoothies on a daily basis really simplified things for me as a new raw foodist (my 3 month anniversary is this Wednesday). I spend less time searching for more to eat and I don't feel as pressed to make more elaborate dishes to fulfill my longings. This means less mental energy figuring out what to make and less time and mess in the kitchen.

I have been to a few seminars hosted by phoenixlanding.org regarding the care of parrots. One in particular was 'cooking' for your bird. So I feel very comfortable with the information I received. I have met the people in the organization and know they care for their birds and are advocates for those without proper care. There are a few reasons that sprouts are good for birds. First, you

Thanks for starting this thread! I read Green for Life a few weeks ago and started the smoothies right away and I ordered a Blendtec blender at the same time. All I can say is ... WOW. I was high raw for a couple months before starting the smoothies. I did not get many greens because I thought of them as inedible in raw form. I had positive health changes eating raw, but I felt a noticeable

I have had 2 fischer lovebirds for over a year now. I sprout for them. They love sprouted wheat and adzuki beans! And they like sprouted lentils and mung too. I have gradually moved away from dry seeds and pellets, but not too fast because they didn't know what fresh food was when I got them. It is my understanding, according to our local parrot rescue phoenixlanding.org, that lovebirds in

I had my first bad effect from eating cooked food last Sunday. Being a raw foodist is really starting to feel official! For my birthday my son took me to our old favorite - Outback Steakhouse. I have not been there in a long time and have not been eating meat regularly for over 3 months. I had the meal I used to always have, their steak special with baked potato, salad and bread. I also had

Yes, karennd, I am very impressed with the blendtec. I like the way it changes speeds and it is actually quieter than my cheaper blender. I am glad I made the investment. Today is my 42nd birthday, raw for 78 days. I feel happier than ever, and healthier too. It feels like quite an accomplishment to have gotten a hold on my 'aging' before today! I will post a picture taken last weekend.

Thanks for your posts! It is very encouraging to get feedback in this journal section. karennd - congratulations on being bold enough and strong enough to start/stay raw on you own! I'll have to check to see if you have a journal too. la_veronique - I am glad you enjoyed the humor! earthangel - thanks for the welcome! After writing my first post I decided to take the plunge and go 1

I am the owner of 2 siamese cats (and 2 lovebirds) that are transitioning to raw. A thread on this forum entitled "how do i make my cats eat raw?" was very helpful and suggested taking a look at rawfedcats.org. I love that site! In the past, I mail ordered high quality kibble and gave them a spoonful of canned tuna or salmon every morning. That was their diet for years. They are

I am not so concerned as to whether the coffee alternative tastes just like coffee, but that it has some kind of distinctive taste/aroma that goes well with nut milk. Coffee with milk and sweetener, either hot or cold, is something I am transitioning away from. The first step was nut milk instead of cow's milk and agave or honey instead of Splenda. (I'm sorry. Would that be a curse word on thi

I am transitioning since June. A few days at a time I am completely raw. I notice when I eat raw only that my digestive system seems to be content and at peace. I don't know how else to describe it! I guess it is working a lot less and has plenty of time for rest. That is why I think putting food in a rested tummy makes it upset. Maybe like us, when things are pretty sweet at work and then so

In my first weeks of going raw, I came to the logical conclusion, while studying, that I no longer rely on others to process my food. I either eat it as it is, or do the processing myself. Of course it would be awesome to have someone else do some preparing, but I don't have that option where I live and in my current circumstances (but that could change!). Anyway, it takes a lot out of a perso

"I could once drink you under the table baby" made me laugh out loud!!!!! The socializing discussion got me thinking and I decided to join the raw food meetup group in my area. They have monthly potlucks and there will not be any food there that is not raw, vegan and organic. Sounds good to me! So I am going to a potluck tomorrow evening. That means 24 hours from now I won't be a

So great to hear from you dewey and Ashcat! When I go to a potluck I always bring a dish I can eat and that does help a lot. BUT, as a new raw foodist (9 1/2 weeks), I am thrilled to have 'access' to old favorites no longer in my house. My biggest weakness are the desserts. Another is going to the movies with friends - popcorn and diet soda. So I have had a chance to observe myself in these so

I'm 9 1/2 weeks raw and turning 42 next week. I do not know anyone else, personally, that is raw, so being connected to this forum really helps me not to feel all alone in my journey. I am not talking about it much to my friends and family. I am always trying new things and didn't want to make a big announcement two days into eating raw, just in case I wasn't going to stick with it. But I

Hello everyone, I have been faithfully following this thread, as promised! ;0) It has made a real difference in my thinking and my understanding (along with other posts I read this week in this forum). I do not know anyone else that eats raw, so it is immensely helpful to see what you eat each day and to hear your thoughts along the way. I am a lot more comfortable with my food choices sinc

I am raw 9 weeks now and am not eating that many beans. I have graduated to the point of sprouting french lentils and wheat berries and adding these to my salads. I also put wheat sprouts through the GreenStar juicer and that makes great dough. My favorite way to incorporate grains, so far, is to soak oat groats and then put them through the juicer. That is the BEST dough! And it made great

I was very hungry the first couple weeks and lost 5 pounds too (which is a fast drop for me). My muscles were weak and I experienced an emotional detox. I was not eating any greens and did not have a juicer. Juicing greens (like collard and kale) really satisfies my body. Avocados helped. Grabbing a few soaked almonds is satisfying. I also ate Ezekiel tortillas (sprouted grain) which to me w

islandgirl, I am glad you asked the question. I was curious too! And the information shared was especially helpful. I began a raw food lifestyle 9 weeks ago. I am still at the stage of getting the bad stuff out. My long-term goal is radiant health which includes lots of things. Nutrition is very important to me so as I incorporate more raw foods, I am mindful to learn what each food provi
