What has helped me the most to dispel almost all of my premenstrual discomforts as well as menstrual cramps is a combination of Evening Primrose oil, and magnesium citrate. I have stopped taking calcium supplements a long time ago... No bloating, pain, and very little symptoms, if at all.

Oh, good point-- as much as I love lemons and grapefruits my teeth don't. I must rinse or the sensitivity will be felt immediately!

I have been drinking a lot of kombucha recently, and I am wondering if it may or may not have any negative consequences. Been craving it, actually. I drink maybe a quart or more per day. Once in awhile my stomach gurgles a bit, but digestion is very good. By the way, I make my own.

I've added MORE pure, raw, natural fats to my diet and my body seems to just lean out even more. I am talking, one half an avocado in my morning green smoothie, along with coconut oil; a few handfuls of Brazil nuts, eaten with celery and some dulse (seaweed) as a snack; and some- at times-(non-vegan) food with non-processed fats later in the day (red palm oil). That being said, every body I

Ahhh... I was in Costa Rico about 4 years ago, for a yoga retreat. We stayed in a lodge with "tree houses", very close to the sea. I remember flocks of parrots flying overhead, and capuchin monkeys in the trees above us as we showered outdoors. And the fresh coconuts cut from the trees and opened with machetes for breakfast. I think of it often---- lucky you that you are there!

Mamey fruits are such a treat! Usually the international market near me in NYC will carry them for a very short time, usually late summer/early fall. Didn't notice them this year; maybe I missed them. They are filling, but so creamy and delicious... a meal in itself, really. Where did you order them from, omega-3? Now my mouth is watering...

I have slowly, and sort of instinctively, stopped using garlic and onions since going raw. Something about the "residue" that seems to linger not only on the breath, but also in the body that disturbs me. Yuck.

I have not tried a substitution for the white sugar; from what I understand other types of sugar just do not feed the "mother" culture as well. And, yes, give it at least a week and the "mother" totally gobbles up the energy from sugar. However, if left for under a week, the brew will taste sweeter. If left for, say, two weeks or more, the taste will be more potent(you'll see

la_v-- I do make my own kombucha. Here is what happens: Boil approx. 1 gallon of water. Turn off heat, add 6 bags of regular black tea to water. Let steep 20 minutes. Remove tea bags; pour tea water into gallon glass jar. Add 1/2 cup regular white sugar and stir. Let sit overnight or until cool. Add in 1/2 oz. of white vinegar, stir. Finally, add in the "kombucha mother", give

Yes-- bananas as well for me. Still, I could live without them more than apples. Also, I always have a large glass container of kombucha brewing...

By this I mean, what one (or more) food item has been always in your fridge or counter no matter what the season? For me it's apples. Always have them, never tire of them. In fact, I have been eating at least one or more apples per day for over 20 years--- by themselves, chucked in a blender with greens for a smoothie, or juiced. Don't know why, but they are my ever-constant raw food st

One half of large green smoothie in the morning (includes kale, green lettuce, flax seed, chia, banana, some berries and raw hemp protein... handful of mung bean sprouts on top for crunch)-- yeah, it's thick! A few hours later, other half of smoothie. In the evening: cole slaw (carrots, cabbage, radishes, and apple chopped in food processor) wrapped up in two sheets of raw nori. A few sunf

Thanks, suncloud. Believe me, it feels very good! And really opens up the heart chakra. Actually, I was born with an unusually flexible spine. Now, my hips are another matter... really need to work to open them up.

Bikram Yoga(that's me with my Bikram instructor in full camel pose); biking, and some weight resistance. For me, exercise is as important for my mental health as my physical well being. P.S.- In my next life, I would love to be a dancer!

Thank you for all the replies-- yes, this was a general BMI question, but peeling back the layers reveals a deeper, maybe emotional/mental issue that I'm struggling with at the moment. And, for me, the body/mind connection is inseparable. Sunberry, I agree- raw, living foods are so important; I can't imagine changing how I eat. SAD food doesn't even register as food to me. At all. Durian, thanks for the info, and advice. I am certainly not at my "personal best" at the moment-- but I'm not sure whether it's more of a "failure to thrive" (i.e. depression) situation, or the fact that I've lost several pounds recently. Oh, I know there is a huge mind/body connection. And when this turns around (as all things do), I am sure I will be back in the pink and

So my body mass index is 17.5, which the online calculator tells me is "underweight." (I am 5'5" and 105 pounds, female and 48 years old). To be honest, I have dropped a few pounds due to stress- yeah, I'm feeling it... the first thing to go is my appetite. Just don't feel like eating much- but what I am eating is clean and raw, for the most part. And I am (robotically) keepi

Well. Salt (and I'm talking natural sea salt here) is something I never used for the first few years going raw. And for someone who is physically active with a regular Bikram Yoga practice (yeah, it's HOT and you sweat buckets), I found that when I began adding in a few sea vegetables (dulse, nori, wakame) and/or a few shakes of sea salt once in awhile, my whole system sort of perked up. My en

Lol- thanks for that, Vinny! Actually, I appreciate all of the comments, and I can relate. The thing about brussel sprouts in particular is that I love them so much, but they are the rare veggie that I cannot figure out how to prepare raw in a way that even comes close to how they taste with a bit of heat applied. Other cruciferous vegetables are easier to deal with. Well, it is wha

Thanks, Paul. That sounds like something to try. Since I don't have a dehydrator, I am thinking that the oven (turned off) might be warm enough maybe? If so, how long would that take?

...tonight was a chilly one in New York City, and all I had to work with was some brussel sprouts. Couldn't gather up an appetite for chomping on them raw. So, I fired up the ol' oven and roasted them (after drizzling with some extra virgin olive oil, and a bit of sea salt and pepper.) Wow! Unbelievably tasty. I decided right then and there that I wanted to eat roasted brussel sprouts eve

Interesting post, suncloud. I was fortunate enough to travel to Japan last October and one thing I realized is that the consumption of seaweeds complemented all of the other flavors of the cuisine perfectly. Especially in the traditional soba dishes (hot or cold), the types of additional ingredients (mostly shredded nori or other type of sea vegetable), reflects the seasonal availability and ha

Well, it is a good thing we are all different! I almost forgot the handful of mung bean sprouts I sprinkle on top. This smoothie is not cold, by the way; by the time everything is all blended, it comes out room temperature. And it is so filling that it comprises both my morning breakfast and mid-day meal. Easy-peasy. And it totally energizes me--- in a good way. Funny thing though-- I som

Oh! And hemp seed protein powder-- I add in a lot of this, for protein, good fats, and 'cause I like the flavor. And because I like my smoothies thick and like pudding, adding extra hemp helps bulk things up.

This is my morning smoothie blend that works really well for me: a few ice cubes, some fresh or frozen berries, greens (kale, spinach or lettuces), flax seeds, chia seeds, small apple, banana, some raw rice protein powder, spirulina, maca, some cinnamon and cacao powder (adds great flavor). After all of this is blended, I will pour about half of it into a large bowl and stir in about 3 tablespo

Wow- I counted up 20 exclamation points in that article. That is an immediate red flag for me.. just from a gut-reaction "sense." It seems to be written from a hyper-anxiety viewpoint, rather than from a calm, well-researched scientific stance. Just my opinion..

O.M.G. Okay, I did almost everything wrong. I didn't wear gloves, I vacuumed, I breathed it in. And when the hose of the vacuum cleaner got clogged with the bigger bits of the glass bulb, I tried to unclog it, sending all the pieces tumbling back onto the floor again, breaking them into even smaller bits... Thank you, coco, for the research and info. I am off to buy some cilantro. Bunc

So a lamp I was using in my studio fell to the floor and the bulb broke into a zillion pieces. The light bulb was one of those spiral, low energy output, but toxic bulbs that are said to release mercury if broken. I have heard that the thing to do is sweep up the glass, (not use a vacuum), wet mop, and ventilate the space. Well, since I live in an apartment that is pre-war, with wooden floor
