So you don't eat any oil? What are the sources of fat in your diet and what proportion of calories do you get from fat? Also, I don't think I easily digest a whole meal of nuts. A large plate of walnuts or almonds, even if soaked? I don't think that will be very kind to my digestive system, or most people's. I eat about 10 soaked walnuts a day and that seems enough. That's hardly a meal thoug

I agree with you to an extent. In a body with a high level of health, the doshas are transcended. I would not say the doshas do not exist, but rather that the body has a way of balancing them itself. Most of us, however, do not have that kind of health. Also, in my opinion it is a bit too simple to say that one just needs to eat a good raw food diet and you will achieve a high level of health

No. Why should that be a criterion for whether a food is healthy or not? Animals may eat mono meals, eating one food only for a whole meal, but that does not prove that small quantities of other foods are not good for the body. If I were following that rule I would eat no oil and no nuts.

For the last few weeks I have cravings for honey. It feels good to eat it, although eating it too much can make me tired and feeling a bit uncomfortable in my body. Is it healthy to eat honey? From what I have read, Natural Hygiene considers it unhealthy because it is just plain sugar and predigested, so it is difficult for the body to absorb and does not have much nutritional value. Othe

Well, to say that doshas have no supporting evidence is to say that an entire medical system for 3000 years or more, or actually a group of medical systems - ayurveda, Tibetan, Islamic - are just fake. I suppose that could be plausibly true but in my perspective it would take more than evidence of modern science to convince me of that. I would rather turn it around and say that much of what g

Thank you both for your suggestions. Lisa, I'll definitely try the herbal teas and perhaps also porridge. I have read the relevant parts of Gabriel Cousen's book and as far as I remember he recommends eating only vata friendly foods but raw, steaming them, and adding oils and vata herbs, if I remember correctly, although I should revisit the book. This doesn't seem enough for my feeling of e

I'm a strongly vata type in the ayurvedic categorisation of bodies and minds. My body asks for warm, moist foods. I've tried steaming my salads and adding more oil to them, but that doesn't seem to satisfy this desire. What do vatas do when they eat a raw diet? After almost a year of experimenting with high raw, I have, at this point, come to a place where I do eat a cooked meal once a day.

Hi all Today I opened my first packet of chia seeds. Like all seeds, I began to rinse them in a pot under a tap thoroughly, only to realise that this is not to be done in the case of chia seeds. They became mucous like and swelled up. I still did some rudimentary washing and have now kept them soaked for a few hours before I eat them. I know that if I lay them in a single layer, flat, upon

Thank you lisa. If you get most of your fat from seeds and nuts, and avocados, I wonder if there is a limit you keep to the amount of seeds and nuts you can take? They can be high on protein. I remember eating too many cashews, walnuts and almonds and feeling tired all day after that. From my reading and calculations with the help of cronometer it seems that it is good to eat upto 10 walnut h

Actually, Joel Fuhrman writes that more than 20% fat may cause cancer - "In light of the preponderance of scientific evidence available, it would be foolish to consume a diet containing more than 20 percent fat, even though the National Cancer Institute still recommends a diet with no more than 30 percent of calories from fat. Studies indicate that diets drawing 30 percent of calories fr

Thank you beneficial4u. How does one find a good source of spirulina? I am in India and all foreign brands are not available or affordable here. The ones that are available - I don't know if they are clean enough. I had considered taking spirulina but then read that water pollution causes toxins to be lodged in it, and also other forms of algae which grow in the vicinity may make spirulina to

On a high raw diet I decided to get 15% fat but I now think this might be too less. The authors I have read have different views. Joel Fuhrman does not give a number, Frederic Patenaude says 15% or so is good, Gabriel Cousens recommends 25-45%. The 80-10-10 is another view which recommends even lesser fat. After about 9 months on a high-raw diet, I feel I need more than 15%. I have lymphatic

Yes, he died relatively young. But I think there is more than one factor influencing this - how sick were you when you began a healthy lifestyle, what your karma is, and other things. I am not particularly concerned with longevity actually. What he says makes sense to me, so I do that. He isn't a role model, only a friend who knows a lot.

Nine months ago I began a high raw food diet. For the first six months or so, my diet was 75% to 100 % raw, organic, with a lot of sprouts and soaked nuts, and mostly organic. In the last three months I have gone down to 2/3rds raw, and 1/3rd cooked. I am trying to understand what is right for my body. In these last three months or so I find my body desiring more fat, and more soft, warm food

21. Iodine
From where does one get iodine in a raw vegan lifestyle? Joel Fuhrman writes that 80% of vegans are likely to be deficient in iodine. I no longer eat table salt, and do not have access to sea vegetables or kale. So I wonder if I am getting enough iodine. Is supplementation a good idea? What supplements do you use and how much?

Thank you organic1, Tai, horsea for your replies. This is helpful. The symptoms are mostly not there now. I fasted a day after which the pain, heaviness and fatigue went away. After breaking my fast I haven't felt it come back so far. Sometimes I feel a sensation in the mid-back or flank but this one seems muscular, from having played quite a bit of sports this week, when I went on a picnic,

For one and a half days I have been having a mild pain in areas where the kidneys are located, which increases after I have a meal. I also have a heavy and mildly painful sensation in the flank and the hips. I also feel significantly tired after a meal. There is also some very mild pain in the soles of my feet, which I have had for many years intermittently and always thought it was because of sc

Thank you. I read that article a couple of days ago. I think I am doing much of what it recommends India is cold up in the North. I am in Delhi where it's not as cold as Scotland but is pretty cold. Especially because the heating is not as good and pervasive as it is in Europe.

Thanks Fresh and kiwibird. Fresh, I really like sprouts and soaked nuts, so I wouldn't want to stop taking them. kiwibird, I agree that cooked foods take as much time as raw foods to prepare. But it's easier to outsource cooked food than raw food. Do you make raw food in addition to an office job, or do you have more free time for yourself than the average worker? I wish I could have more

I've been on a high raw diet for seven months now, which means between 75 and 100 percent of my diet is raw. In these seven months there have been four breaks of about a week each where I was eating light but mostly cooked food while travelling. I still have some cravings for cooked food. Now, when I say cravings I do not mean that I overeat or cannot control myself from eating something. Per
