Proper distilling requires an out gassing period to allow substances with a low boiling point (VOCs mostly) to evaporate out. I'm guessing that 10 minutes or so just under the boiling point (100 C (212 F) at sea level) would do it. And then when boiling, let the steam escape for a few minutes before condensing it.

The high pressure won't harm any of the molecules in the juice. It is a very good way to get the highest quality juice and very efficient. But as soon as anything is juiced, it becomes very perishable. I would prefer my juice to be less than a day old. Their 30 day expiration date is ludicrous and leads me to suspect all their claims. In my experiments with a crude press I made, I got 0.925

Thanks for all your excellent posts over the years. Rye is my favorite grain for rejuvalic too. I find that grinding the sprouted rye releases much more of the nutrients in the seeds making for a very tasty lemony drink + only a few table spoons of grain is needed for quarts of rejuvalic.

A very good book about the spiritual side of bee keeping is Song of Increase: Keeping honey bees is a very good thing to do to understand the beauty and spirit of the bees - and all insects. And since you are working hard to help the bees, building a hive, protecting them from predators, etc. it is fair to take some of their honey. Overall the bees benefit from this relationship, as

Ripe fruit bruises easily. By the time it reaches the market the bruise will have become a "rotten spot". This is just what you want. This is the way it is with the peaches I get from a farmer. She can't sell the ones that have bruised as most customers shun them, but they are the absolutely best ripest ones. She saves them for me at a discounted price but they are worth a prem

By thinking back 4 billion years to the very start of life on Earth one can discern some incredible things about nutrition and metabolism. From day one 4 billion years ago life has ceaselessly faced periods of plenty to eat followed by periods of scarcity or nothing at all to eat. And the survival of the fittest has always ruled - only those best able to deal with the challenges survived, the r

Humans mistakenly think lean and mean is the way of great athletes. But the reality of animals living naturally in the wilds is just the opposite - big and fat is how super feats of athleticism are preformed, and while on a total fast to boot. Thanks Tai. I've been reading up on Lotus and Water Lily and in general the characters you point out will give the right answer, but not always. When young or in deep water Lotus leaves will be floating flat on the water. And sometimes Water Lily leaves and flowers will stand somewhat above the water (as in the photos above and below). For absolute ID look for the unique seed pod

Thanks for the heads up Tai. I looked it up and and they're not only different but even in very different families: QuoteIt might be easy at first to get these two aquatic flowers mixed up, but they have definite distinctions. In fact, though these are both flowers found in water, they actually belong to two separate families of flowers. It is also easy to tell them apart at a glance

If your bananas are cold enough (hard frozen) and protected from the heat of the defrost cycle they will last weeks to years with full nutrition. The lower the temperature the longer they will last. At the lowest setting on my refrigerator the bananas get rock hard and the ice cubes will pop and even explode a bit when placed in water. The defroster is the big enemy of your bananas and other

Things I've tried with some success: Put melon (or any fruit) back together and let ripen. Taping the seam may help. Leave apart and let ripen. The outer part of the fruit dries and protects the inner. Cut up and put in your food dryer for slow drying. It will ripen as it dries. With persimmons the best way to ripen them is to cut them open when they show some soft spots and let rip

Good post John. However, even in the arctic abundant fruits can be had. Here's a post I made some time ago: As incongruous as it may seem the grizzly bears of Denali National Park eat a diet of interest to both the vegan and fruitarian. In his book The Grizzlies of Mount McKinley, Adolph Murie gives an illuminating account of his research. First the bears hibernate for 5-6 months, from late
