Cup for cup, and gram for gram, nuts and seeds contain the highest amount of vegan protein. 1 cup of brocolli (91 grams) contains ONLY 2.6 grams of protein, compared to 1 cup of sesame seeds (144 grams) that contains 25.5 grams of protein and 1 cup of peanuts (146 grams) that contains 37.7 grams of protein. Comparing the PERCENT of protein in a food to the NUMBER of calories to find food

My husband and I have been growing bananas for over 15 years and this is what I always tell our customers when they ask,"how do I know when a banana is ready to eat?" I tell them to hold the bunch up by the heel that the bananas are all connected to. If a banana is ripe enough to drop off the heel by itself, then it is ready to eat. Before that, the banana will be too starchy and m

I found out from www.nutritiondata.com that whole sesame seeds are high in iron - 1/4 cup will account for 28% of the daily requirement if I'm figuring it right. If you go to www.nutritiondata.com, be sure to check the serving size at the top of the page for each food. For sesame seeds, the serving size is 1 cup (!) equaling 116% DV iron. Also, parsley is high in iron (1 cup has 21% DV). I

To 24 Carrots, I'd also like to know what was the Horizon scandal? Didn't they just discontinue their soybean baby formula? Does that have anything to do with the scandal? If they got caught using nonorganic ingredients and their certification was pulled, couldn't that be an indication that organic certification is working as it should? -Ally

To Yogamama, Rawmark, and Sodoffsocks, Sprouted wild rice sounds pretty good. I think I'll try it too. Thanks! Maybe nutritiondata.com has info on protein content of cooked dried beans and sprouted beans. -Ally

It is illegal to buy or sell any rice in this country, organic or otherwise, unless it has been sterilized. Therefore, your rice will NOT sprout. Amazing isn't it!!!! I don't know what process is used for sterilizing, but apparently it doesn't affect organic certification. It might however affect the enzyme content, and the rice will certainly not sprout. I learned this unpleasant fact whe

Dear Lilpaws, I agree with Chicory that you may be just fine the way you are. Unless you have suddenly started losing more weight than you want to, and you don't feel well, you probably shouldn't worry that you're not eating enough. That doesn't mean you shouldn't pay attention to whether or not you're getting enough of the right nutrients. From the way you described your diet, it soun

Dear Rawdev, Hope you do better with the B12. I also found myself with a B12 deficiency after about 15 years of 100% vegan diet. I also thought B12 deficiency was a myth. It took me about a month of eating a vegan B12 supplement to get rid of the pins and needles in my feet and hands. My husband has been 100% vegan for as long as me and has never experienced any weakening or B12 deficien

Dear Fruitarian One: Way to go! Honest answer. If you get too hungry on just fruit, I suggest you try to avoid the cooked if you can; just stay raw food vegan if that's possible. Throw a good portion of raw wheat germ on your salad. Either way, no shame! I moved here to the Big Island 22 years ago to pursue my dream of becoming 100% fruitarian. My husband and I now have a 24 - acre divers

Dear rawdev, You mentioned maybe you should try milk. Everybody needs to do a certain amount of experimenting before they can be confident in what their own diet should be. But if you would rather not try milk, I'd just like to encourage you by saying that my husband and I have been strict vegans now for almost 20 years. He works construction 5 days a week, plays basketball 2 nights a

Since you asked, my interpretation of "fruitarianism" is eating only fruit. That would include of course foods like cucumbers, tomatoes, and avocados. Technically it should probably also include nuts and seeds. If anyone who loves fruit is called a "fruitarian", wouldn't that be kind of like saying that anyone who loves vegetables is a vegetarian? I'm in my 50s too, and have had vertigo episodes since I was 12. One night several years ago, I had an episode lasting about an hour when I could not move my head without having a very extreme vertigo attack. Later that evening I had trouble standing up without falling over. It was very scary. I went to see a nurse the next day who told me that I could possibly be deficient in iron. At the t

Try adding sesame seeds to your diet. They are one of the best, most concentrated food sources of calcium. A nutritionist told me many years ago that a lack of calcium causes those leg cramps people get at night. Make sure the sesame seeds are unhulled (brown) sesame seeds because most of the calcium is in the hull. You probably need only about a quarter cup a day. I find them to be very
