I want to wish you the best of luck with your trip to Nepal but I too was concerned that part of your motivation is to lose even more weight if you're already very thin. As someone who almost died of anorexia, I feel sad when I see signs that another beautiful human being might be going through that hell. I want to add that getting to a super-low weight would not be healthy for trekking. When

fruitgirl - - looking forward to continuing to discover the subtle nuances our tastebuds can tell us about our internal organs' smiles. I think we may have chatted over one or another board before - was it you who broke a leg and I offered to bring you watermelon but you had a neighbor already doing it? I've been living in Walnut Creek for the past yr or so but am moving back to Berkeley ri

Thanks so much, blue_sky! I was hoping to go to Penang area - had heard that the durian there can't be beat. Am guessing that the season there will be somewhat earlier than where you are. But I'm open to going south in Malaysia too - so much wonderful world to discover! love Ela

Omg fruitgirl - I shop at Berkeley Bowl too!!! How come we don't know each other! Well, I was thinking that you had mamey sapote on the bargain shelf, which is what I was loving in Costa Rica and which the Bowl _very occasionally_ carries (and usually not good quality) but probably you had a white sapote, right? Greenish-golden skin and white, slightly vanilla flesh? Those actually do grow in

Wow, fruitgirl, where are you to be getting sapote in the US? I was enjoying them very much in Costa Rica - I'd take a sapote for lunch over apples any day of the year. But I have to say (echoing something Uma said earlier I think) - apples don't really work for me. I can eat a couple, but can't really make a meal out of them - they give me a bit of discomfort. love Ela

blue_sky - thanks for your response/advice. Not just coming to Malaysia to eat durian, but that is definitely a strong motivation. I was looking at coming sometime June/July/August - so probably later is better within that window? Whereabouts in Malaysia are you? Gosia, I agree that juicy fruits are more hydrating than water. I hope that you and your family get to feast on fresh durian s

macfly, thank you for sharing - it's alwys interesting and affirming to hear other's takes on similar processes. Bryan, I love what you say about acceptance and choices. I too have had the experience of sending love to my belly after that kind of meal and really noticing a difference in the way things feel. It so helps to come out of the harsh fear/judgment space into the gratitude space. l

Hi there - - I'm not Bryan or Uti, but one of the others who thrives on that kind of diet with occasional trips to Cafe Gratitude, and can provide my experiences/instincts for what they're worth. The first few times I went to Gratitude, I was very anal about trying not to take in too much fat, avoiding onions/garlic, etc. Later, I discovered that at Gratitude they actually have a list of s

Hello! Durianaholic (it saved my life!) here. First off, to answer Gosia's question - yes, I have on occasion found both fresh and frozen durian to have a dehydrating effect. When I was in Thailand, eating fresh local organic durian, the advice I was given by the locals was that one should drink some water _before_ eating the durian - when you're full of durian and suddenly feel really thirsty

I just got back from Frederic's Manifesting Health and Abundance seminar in Costa Rica. Am curious as to whether any of the other folks on this board were there too. I was cosupervising the kitchen, so didn't really participate in the seminar portion of it. I had a wonderful time. Not quite what I expected but I had the opportunity to meet some wonderful people and learn a lot.

Uma, I want to echo your last words - they sound just like something I could have said! I've been noticing that while I've naturally been eating a high proportion of mono meals in recent months, my tendency instead has been to overemphasize my rarer savory/complex meals or even my smoothie meals and beat myself up for them! One of many things that I learned in Costa Rica was that despite t

Living in the Bay Area, I'm so fortunate to have many raw friends. I participate in the community as much as I can and it has given me so much. I've also made friends going to retreats - most recently Frederic Patenaude's in Costa Rica, from which I just returned - met some wonderful people there. I love my internet cronies and relationships but real life it is such fun to have friends who also

AVO! It's good to see you back on here and to feel your good energy. All I can say is, I've changed my own life. From sick, miserable, victim, in scarcity mode, starving, to healthy, happy, taking charge of my life, abundant! And as I was wisely told when I was sick and beating up on myself for being 'useless', you can only be creative, help other people, etc, when you have an overflow, when y

Yes - but 'a bit of avocado' rather than 'lots of avocado' would work better, I think. That's basically what my diet is - I find myself eating nuts/seeds/coconuts quite infrequently - avocado and durian feel so much better as fat sources! Are you enjoying this way of eating?

Yes, agree with Rob - prickly pears are _wonderful_! And the seeds are just fine. Could blend them up with some figs maybe to make a pudding/pie filling but they are so delicious and showy just by themselves. I tend to make curry with cauliflower, apples, celery and raisins all chopped up and then a dressing of oranges, curry powder, ginger, pepper and some sort of fat (I've done it on differe

Best of 2006 - several 'bests', actually! Durian, of course, but also jackfruit, sapote, and some 'concoctions' (but they never quite match the pure fruits)). First thing I ate in 2007 was a clementine tangerine, before my long flight back to Cali where some of my lovely persimmons are still left! Happy New Year, all! love Ela

Yes, thanks Sheryl! I'm so glad someone posted a link to this, because I read it last night and was riveted! I had the privilege to spend a weekend with Storm and Jinjee at one of their retreats (three years ago, just before Adagio was born) - was quite a different person then, still very weak etc, but really connected with Storm in particular and have been wanting to get back with them. You can make your own raw mustard! You can buy mustard seeds, grind them in a coffee grinder and mix with whatever (I'm guessing olive oil, lemon, honey). I had some homemade raw honey mustard, though, when I was in Hawaii, for the first time in four years as a rawfooder (I occasionally ate mustard before raw) and I noticed that it was _really_ hard on my stomach. It tasted good in an addictive s

_Definitely_. To such an extent that I find myself avoiding them even though I love the taste of them: it doesn't seem worth it for how it makes me feel and the sleep disturbance. That said, if I go to a raw restaurant, it often seems like having a bit of cacao helps send all that complicated/fatty stuff through a bit more easily - two wrongs making a right? Well, there's a place for it anyway.

Hi Everyone! Greetings from London - I had to leave my beloved persimmons for a family holiday visit, and wanted to share a story. Yesterday, I went to the dentist for the first time in five years. Background: in those five years, I've been the sickest ever in my life and also more recently the healthiest ever. Four of those years I've been raw. It's been my intention and my experience tha

Do you have access to some good dates? Dates are in season right now and they tend to be somewhat warming. Generally, sugar really seems to help. I do a produce stand once a week and have to stand out in all weathers and last winter, which was pretty rough here, dates were definitely a big help. Standing still selling produce is tougher than doing labor and being more physically active, although

Trinity, I'm sorry but I have to disagree. Coffee is like a cheap amphetamine. It jolts your adrenals and puts your body into stress mode - so sad that so many people are so rest-deprived that they rely on that to stay awake. It's also highly acidic, which means that it pulls the alkaline minerals out of the body just to protect the body from it - alkaline minerals that the body needs for othe

Rob's right - in other words, you can use seeds interchangeably with nuts to make milk - it's just a matter of the flavor and how fatty it'll be. Pumpkin seeds don't work too well for milk in my experience and I happen not to like the taste of sunflower seeds too much (to me, they're too savory for milk). But sesame seed milk and hemp seed milk are wonderful! Experiment with more or less water fo

I got to try heart of palm when I was in Hawaii last September. It is a strange thing, because the coconut tree has to die in order for us to eat that part - it is literally the heart of the sprouting palm tree. I can only describe it as being a little bit like artichoke heart, but white and sweeter. It was tasty (but nowhere near as good as coconut sprout that Bryan brings up! The guy who bro

Brian, you're very welcome. Someone said at one of the first raw potlucks I ever went to that the hardest thing about raw is not the food, it's the human desire to 'belong', whether that's through eating the same way as others or whatever it is. It's definitely the case that it's easier to feel good about doing something when you get validation from other people about it. Thank goodness for
