Hey everybody, Yesterday was a tough one...the specter of socializing reared its ugly head again. My roommate just got out of a crappy relationship, and was bound and determined for us to go out. I only had one drink all night, despite there being free booze at the first place we went, but it was enough to make the post-bar Burger King drive-thru run a wee bit torturous. The BK Veggie w/ onion

Hear, hear. Green tea's not gonna kill ya. Tons of antioxidants. Plus, what would that make you, 99.99%?? Being raw is not about rules. It's about being the healthies, happiest individual you can be.

From what I've read, it's just that when a young watermelon is placed in a square-shaped container (like a box), it grows to fill the space; hence the square shape. That's a manipulation, I suppose, but not exactly scary frankenfood. I think it would be fun to try it. If only I grew watermelons...

I hate to disagree with Bryan, as he seems so raw-wise but I also find that the only thing that satisfies my carb cravings is a little bit of fat. A few nuts to munch on, some homemade guacamole & crackers, some sprouted hummus or tabouli...it's the fats that keep me feeling full. Perhaps you could try to split the difference and have a banana w/ a bit of nut butter when the munchies str

Rawdancer, that is HUGE progress. Really, really, really fantastic!! In terms of nuts, have you ever considered nut butter? You can find some great raw cashew/almond/madacamia butters at health food stores, and eat it w/ banana or celery. Or, if you're not particularly fond of it, just put a tbsp or so in a smoothie. It's a great way to up your nutrition, and you won't even know it's in there.

Suncloud -- where does one find one of these fantastical fruits? I've never seen 'em! And I have to admit, I *gulp* bought the dolmas at Whole Foods. I'm actually not a huge fan of pre-packaged "gourmet" raw, generally speaking, but these things aren't as pricey as most, and I really love them. Not too heavy, very flavorful. I think it's the sprouted rice that does it for me. I d

I know there's some debate about Lara & other raw bars on the market, but if you're feeling like you NEED that snickers and don't want to make your own, they might be a good, healthier, raw alternative. I eat them occasionally when on the go, and the coco mole variety is pretty candybar-esque.

Suncloud - what's an ice cream bean fruit? It sounds, um, FANTASTIC. Today my roomie & I ventured up to El Matador beach in Malibu. I had never been before, and wow was it gorgeous. I will defend the dirty jerzey shore (where I grew up) til my dying day, but it sure doesn't look like that. Anyway, we packed a raw picnic (she's not raw - or veg for that matter - but charmed enough/willin

Not to stir the pot but I have a question out of pure curiosity: does anyone know the stats on min. fat requirements for men vs. women? Are there any? I honestly don't know, but intuitively it would make sense that women require a bit more fat in their diet (whether trying to get them from seeds and nuts or other sources) than men do. I know that women generally have a much higher body fat p

Caseyberaw! We ARE neighbors! Or close enough...I actually live right on the Hollywood/West Hollywood border (turn left at the trannies), but my best friend lives in Echo Park, and I like to venture over there if I run out of supplies before the Sunday farmers' market on Ivar. Have you been to any raw restaurants around here? I tried Cru in Silverlake, and liked it, and a few months ago splurged

Today was pretty typical in terms of my personal fat intake. I had 1 tbsp raw cashew butter in my fruit smoothie, and 1/2 avocado, made into guac, with a few homemade crackers (the recipe had 1/2 c soaked nuts and 1 1/2 tbsp of flax oil combined with veggie pulp and herbs. I ate about 1/3 of them). The non-fatty stuff on the menu was 1 apple, 1 pt raspberries, 3 leaves kale, 2 dates (in the s

Khale, you had me laughing! Drink me under the table, huh? And I hear ya on the cosmetics thing - for me, a trip to sephora is much more dangerous than any restaurant could hope to be!! I'm so glad you're feeling better, by the way. Thanks for all the kind words, guys. It's true, even if we don't all do month-long water fasts and live in tents and the whatnot (though I'm a little in awe of peo

Hey lovebird - I've always found that socializing presents the biggest dilemma with respect to raw as well. I go out a bunch w/ friends, none of whom are raw. The best way to go about it, for me at least, is a combination of simply saying to yourself "no, i don't eat those things" with having some preset "cheats" that you know you can have...that way I don't feel as guilty, an

Rawdancer - that stuff sounds great! How awesome are farmer's markets?? Don't be anxious...smoothies in particular are pretty good for texture, if you're having problems on that front. As for today, Friday the 17th: AM: 22 oz. juice - carrot, apple, spinch, celery, ginger LUNCH: 1 container raw barley tabouli from the echo park farmer's market. I am in love with the sprout man. Sigh. It's true that my experiences are my own. I am also not a doctor. But I very, very seriously doubt that there is a medical professional alive who would advocate a 5'7" teenager dropping 30 lbs to weigh 100. Or eating well under 1000 calories a day to do so. If you think that is a healthy goal, or represents a healthy mindset about food, that is your choice.

To be fair, fresh, I didn't write that the men were being irresponsible. I said that the male posters were giving advice that didn't appear to take into account the place that rawfrancois is coming from. I understand that you were responding to a more general debate re: the nature and necessity of fats, and think your most recent post to rawfrancois personally was very much on point. That sai

I think natural conditions, etc. are beside the point here. In my opinion, encouraging someone with extreme (and unhealthy) goals of weight loss - and a fear of foods that might stand in the way of that goal - is totally irresponsible. Rawfrancois, please don't contine pursuing that kind of weight loss. I'm also about 5'7" and in my 20's. I weigh 125, and everyone always asks me how I st

Vegan indian food was one of my cooked staples. Alas, I have the PF&W cookbook, but no dehydrator. Saaad christmas.

Again, I didn't mean to sound all judge-y. Raw dancer, I feel ya -- as someone who struggled with an eating disorder in my teens, I know how all-consuming the thoughts of what you're putting into your body can be. Even now, having had that problem under control for ten years, eating can still sometimes feel too close to an 'obsession' for comfort. That's part of what I feel is so great about

5Also, I forgot broccoli sprouts! Why are these so good? I HATE alfalfa sprouts with a passion, but I can eat these plain. In mass. And to respond to enchantress...I've noticed the same thing. I mean, I didn't eat that much today (although I'm a night eater, so stay tuned), but generally speaking I look at others' posts and think "...what?? I ate about FIVE TIMES that. All fruits and veg

Sorry to post late for yesterday. Well, my first day (the 13th) got off to a somewhat iffy start, due to a last minute trip to Vegas, also known as the unhealthiest place on earth... But I tried my best, and am actually sort of proud of the results considering the circumstances... AM: 2 big bottles of Fiji water (about 3 liters?) 2 small bloody marys (eek, but hey, at least what ha

Hey everyone. I first went raw about a year and a half ago. Generally speaking, I really liked the way it felt, but I also managed to lose a LOT of weight in the six months or so I was 100% (I'm 5'8" and went from 135 lbs to about 112 at my lowest). It got the point that everyone I knew was ready to stage an intervention... At any rate, cut to about four months ago. Somehow, during wh
