The squash and melon plants we've grown have all looked very different. Especially melon, vs. squash. You should be able to guess what it is by comparing it to pictures of other plants. Or you can post a pic and we'll see if we can get you some answers!

The varieties you want to try really depend on where you're located. Some varieties handle the cold better, some the heat, it really depends. Take a good look at your seed catalog and they'll usually have notes about the strengths of that particular variety. It'll usually tell you if that variety is high yielding, slow to bolt, etc.

I've been juicing my greens lately instead of making "green smoothies". I notice I use a lot more greens when I juice versus blending and enjoy it more. Using more greens is just fine by me...we have an abundance of kale, collards, mustard and chard in the garden. I'm hoping I'm getting more out of using more greens for the juice, versus the few leaves I can stand in a smoothie. I

Yeah, I just found out about the copyrighting they did! I don't think very highly of them anymore.

I second Jodi's advice with the spider plants and pothos! Also, sanseveria or Mother-in-law's tongue are incredibly hardy and I've kept them in rooms that receive little artificial light and no natural light and they thrive. Dracaena's are great if you have more light. I've even got a baby sago palm in the house and it's thrived in each place I've put it.

Quite a big request, Lisa! :-) If I were you I'd just take some time and check out a couple books on different methods of gardening. I think for every gardener there is a preferred method or trick. Lasagna gardening, square foot gardening, French Intensive, etc. Lucky for you a lot of gardening resources are tailored for colder climates than we I deal with. For example, I've read of peo

Thanks coco. That is a great way to get a garden spot ready. Unfortunately we're starting right now and want to get things growing well soon and where we're at (just across the border of Florida in GA) our grass and weeds will actually just grow up through the cardboard and mulch and it takes a long time for it to kill the grass. We're also doing a lot right up by the house and for every ben

That's what we're moving towards! Since I've gotten my hubby and son on board with living foods we've even gotten rid of our goats and most of our chickens and are focusing on growing the raw food we are eating. Anticipating the rental of a sod cutter in the near future...get rid of the grass we need to mow and grow some food! Heaven for us. Love Path to Freedom, they're so inspirational.

Just wondering if anyone out there has used diatomaceous earth before. My husband researched it a bit and found all sorts of good things about it but we've never heard of anyone taking it before. We've got a 50lb bag (food grade) we've been using for our animals but since our lifestyle change we're selling off our livestock and will have tons of it left. Figure we might as well use it if it'

We turn ours often and if it's been dry we'll add some water if needs be.

I got mine off ebay. It was still about $80 but it was a nice Omega juicer, just not the latest model. Works great though and I've found a few good kitchen deals off ebay. I second craigslist and thrift shops too. Whatever works 'till you can save for what you really want or sweet talk someone into gifting you one for your birthday or something. :-)

You both were a help, thank you! I think I'll end up going with the Spirooli horizontal type slicer. I don't like that it leaves a core, but I'm sure between the 3 of us someone will chow down on that leftover. Looks like a price I'm comfortable with. Thanks for that chart, it really helped to see all the features of the 4 types of spiral slicers laid out so simply.

I know this isn't a blender or juicer but it is a kitchen gadget and I could use some advice. Anyone have any reccomendations on the different types of spiral slicers out there in the $20-$40 range? I see 3 different designs and wonder which would be best. Sure don't want to hate what I get and have to buy another one but I dream of easy veggie pasta.

I've never really been much of an avocado eater but since hopping on this party train I want to give it a go and I've got a question! At the shop the other day I found Florida avocados and was wondering....Is there's much of a difference between those and the typical smaller Mexican/Californian avocados? I'd love to buy the Florida ones since I'm in Georgia and do my best to buy produce tha

Hey everyone, new here. I just got a used Vita-Mix 3600 and used it to make my first green smoothie. I mixed it for less than 2 minutes and it was warm when I was done. Is this normal? Also, there were still small bits of apple peel present in the mix. Still did a better job than my food processor, but was hoping all the little bits would be liquified. I was afraid to blend too long sin

I'm new here and getting ready to hop on this party train. My biggest worry is this: my husband is willing to go at it a little at a time, say adding green smoothies and then seeing where that leads, which I think is great. He's reading about living foods/eating raw and is supportive. But, I'm an all or nothing girl and I worry about the hassle of having to cook for him and our son and then

You could also try a spray of blended habenero (or other hot pepper) and garlic. Also, some bugs will hatch eggs in the soil of your plants and stick around forever like fungus gnats....those can be foiled with a layer (at least 1/4" thick) of sand over your plants soil. Good luck!
