I turned to a raw diet last Sunday. Over the course of this week I have read and posted quite a bit on these boards. Today, after posting about using wool and silk products for knittng and reading the responses to me, I've spent several hours reading about the mistreatment of animals that we use for meat, clothing, etc. My heart is just broken for all of the years that I have spent purchasing

Its not hot at all -- I'd guess about 74 degrees. I didn't know to keep them in the dark though. They only sizzled right after I rinsed for several seconds and then stopped. They have already started sprouting now -- its been less then 24 hours.

My body has a very bad reaction to ginseng. Personally, I think that people should read about the herbs they want to use before they use them. Since I reacted so badly to ginseng, I have pretty much ignored herbs because my body just may be sensitive to them. If I decide to take the time to read the pros and cons about them, I may try using some of them one day.

Plainlydressed -- I also thank you for your replies. I can see how so many factors may need to be taken into consideration to make balanced decisions. It would be difficult for me to change everttgubg cold turkey overnite! But I am making changes. I have started with a raw diet. I've changed laundry soap, cleaning supplies, etc. This will be a gradual change for me while I am educating myse

Paul, Thanks much for your help on this thread. This is something that I feel I can no longer turn a blind eye too. There are so many things that matter to me. Sometimes I feel that my plate is full. But I need to find more room on it to educate myself about these things and make some decisions. Molli

Now I understand more about the philosophy behind vegan living. I thought -- and probably silly of me -- that vegans didn't eat animals, fish, etc. because they didn't feel that we should kill them. I didn't realize until now that it is much more than that -- its more about how the animals are treated while they are alive, etc. That makes sense to me. I wonder why vegans have pets though? Ar

Pborst -- thanks for your response. Its something I need to think about. I'm not sure that sheep would be very happy if their wood was never sheared. Not sure if there are any "wild" sheep on the planet. I guess I could read up about them. Perhaps their wool stops growing after it gets a certain length? I know that angora goats' wool keeps growing and growing and growing and will

Do vegans not use wool or silk products? I'm a knitter. I'm wondering if a true vegan would not knit with wool or silk yarns? Not sure I could give those up!

I have been eating raw for 6 days. I have been fortunate to be extremely healthy my entire life (I'm 45). I have never had any medical problems -- rarely even get a cold or the flu. Prior to switching to a raw diet, I pretty much ate whatever I wanted to eat, within reason. I'm definitely not overweight. My BMI is on the lower side of healthy, but it isn't too low. I switched because I read

I believe in having long term storage of food supplies, as much as possible. For those long term storage people out there, how do you store your dried beans and grains? Do you have to purchase special kinds if you want to sprout them?

This is my 6th day raw, and I decided to try to sprout garbonzo beans last nite. I soaked the beans, put them in a mason jar with cheesecloth and a rubber band across the open top and set the jar at an angle. This morning I rinsed the beans, put the cheesecloth back on to cover the opening, set the jar at an angle and began preparing my green juice. I heard a sizzling noise coming out of the j

This is my 6th day raw and I haven't had those symptoms. I was feeling flushed for 2 days -- very brief moments -- but that went away. I woke up with a sore throat the 3rd day and that went away. I felt really really tired on the 2nd and 3rd day, but that also went away. I'll probably have some more detox symptoms, but that is it so far.

Does any kind of pulp work for a body scrub or are some better then others? I never thought about that but it makes sense.

Thanks. I do usually have plenty of confidence. But completely changing my eating habits like this has made me want to make sure I'm getting what I need. I think I'll check out the farmers markets and the health food stores this weekend and purchase a variety of stuff as you mentioned and go from there. Fortunately I work from home so I can juice off and on thruout the day if I want to!

You experienced raw food eaters are so helpful to us newbies. I've told myself this weekend I want to look thru the raw food books I've purchased and look on the internet and put together a list of the "best" foods to juice and what nutrients they have. I want to figure out what I should be juicing during the week to try to hit all the nutrients that my body needs. I have been a very

I've never consumed alcohol. But chocolate -- now that's another topic. I haven't 100% given up my chocolate ... yet. But I just eat a little piece of "raw" chocolate once a day. Today is my 5th day raw. I'm not ready to give up chocolate LOL. Giving up all the meat I used to eat has been easy so far.

I checked out the link. It does look pretty easy. Do you have to purchase seeds or grains that are labelled "for sprouting". Last weekend I went raw shopping for the first time. I went to Whole Foods and purchased a lot of grains, seeds, nuts that were labelled raw. I think I will try to sprout some of the garbanzo beans and see if it works!

John, I will check into this. I haven't blended yet. I an just juicing or eating my fruits and veggies in their natural state. I have a centrifugal juicer so I guess I still need to drink it right away. I need to check into the greenstars. I love the juice I have been making, and would definitely drink more of it each day if I made more of it in the morning.

Would you mind sharing a little more detail about how you sprout in a glass jar? Are we talking about a pint jar, a quarter jar or something larger? How many seeds do you put in the jar? How wet do you keep them? I need to learn how to sprout! How much light do they need or doesn't light matter for sprouting? Once they have sprouted, do you just rinse again and can you keep in the fridge fo

I have been drinking my green juiced drink first thing in the morning. If I want to work out right when I wake up, should I drink the green drink before I work out or work out on an empty stomach? Should I take it to the gym with me and drink it as my fluid while working out? I don't want to make myself sick when I'm working out. Not sure if I should feed my body with this green drink before

Well I've only been at this for a little less then a week, but each morning I have been juicing some combination of romaine lettuce, kale, celery, cucumbers (usually only 2 out of the 4) and add a whole lemon and then an apple. I read that some of the nutrients start breaking down 15-20 minutes after juicing so I drink it up and don't store it. I didn't know there were products that you could s

This is my 5th day raw and I'm tossing a whole lot of pulp down the drain from my juicer. I'm thinking of figuring out ways to use it. Can you freeze pulp without loosing too much nutritional value? I was thinking about freezing it (separating fruits and veggies) and using it when I get the nerve to start making stuff in the excaliber dehydrator that I've ordered! Or dehydrate the pulp to tur
