Ideally, I'd like to find enough work to offset the costs of my stay. I have a diverse range of skills in the building trades, alternative energy, gardening, photography and more. Of course, I'm dreaming of someplace with lots of fresh fruit.

Does anyone here migrate to warmer climes for the winter? If so, where do you like to go and how long do you stay? I'm looking to go somewhere in 2010 to leave the cold and wet Northern California winters for a month or two. I'd love to find a place do do some work exchange to help with my costs.

Madinah, Plantains, eh. How do you prepare plantains raw? My friends just bought a big box, but they are cooked vegans. I assumed you had to cook them to break the starch down. That's was another thing in Costa Rica. We stayed at a Tico (Costa Rican's name for themselves) beach town, Playa Uvita, which is on the edge of a coastal National Park. Surfing is no good there, so the foreign vi

Hydroponic Produce is grown in an artificial unnatural environment. By virtue of that, the tomato may look like a tomato, but it will be devoid of the nutritional complexities and benefits to the consumer. Organically and bio-dynamically grown fruits and veggies are grown in Living Soil, the key to getting the maximum amount nutrients into the consumer of the produce. In my opinion, if you

I buy them in bulk from my co-op in a nearby city or the natural foods store in my little town. I guess they're pretty popular here because they carry both the brown and the golden flax seeds in a small town. I can't remember the source, but I read or heard that soaking flax too long makes them taste bitter. I have taken soaked seeds and put them in the fridge when I wasn't able to finish ma

meganbubbs, I store my flax seeds in glass jars in the freezer and only grind them right before using them. My favorite flax things are flax crackers with soaked whole seeds, brown and golden. Soak the flax seeds overnight or as little as 6 hours. Use enough water to keep them covered slightly as they soak. Put the soaked seeds into a large mixing bowl. In a food processor pulse to a m

I don't think it's necessary to go to an expensive retreat to do a longer water fast, you can do it at home. However, for an inexperienced faster or someone with serious or life threatening health issues to try to do a long fast alone is risky. If you read Shelton's books you'll see that he was from the supervised fast retreat school of thought. In my opinion that came from his medical backgrou

Thank you Ruby. This is a tough subject for a lot of western people to discuss openly. A friend of mine had some words of wisdom which helps me with topics like this, "What would you do or say if you didn't give a @#$%& what other people thought of you?" That doesn't mean that it is okay to intentionally disturb someone's peace by abusing them with your point of view. For instan

It's my understanding that the kidneys regulate the ph of the blood plasma at a slightly alkaline 7.4, therefore the ph of the urine changes according to what's being removed. So does that mean that a true test of the body's ph should be based on blood plasma ph? And if the kidneys are functioning properly, then the blood plasma should be close to the 7.4 ph, so why concern oneself with the num

I experienced a number of different cleanses over the years: liver, colon and an extended parasite cleanse. They all worked to varying degrees, but in my ten years of experience with cleanses it's hard to beat water fasting or just maintaining a high fruit, low fat raw diet with plenty of greens to detox the body.

Your experience sounds similar to mine during raw transition. I had the experience of craving lots of variety of raw foods when I was transitioning over a 2 year period, a few of this and one of that and on and on, never feeling satisfied. I think that comes from our society in general teaching us to stimulate ourselves with variety. Unfortunately that's tough on the digestion. As a conseque

Be gentle with yourself Dee, no one, not you or them, is doing anything wrong. The only thing you need to do is to take care of yourself and that may look like spending less time with your old friends and finding new friends with more compatible interests and lifestyle. Think of this as a test for your relationships. If the love you share with these people is unconditional, then both you a

The Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine advocates urine therapy and they see it as sacred customized personal medicine; your urine is balanced to your body to assist it in healing. And it's free, so naturally the western medico-pharmaco cartel would prefer that we keep all the old disinformation and fears intact along with their profits. This really stirs up westerners with our belief system

I chipped a couple of my front teeth years ago. I tried to just let them smooth the sharp edges off, but it became so annoying I finally went to a dentist who did a porcelain infill on them and smoothed them off. That was about 25 years ago and my current hygienist says it's a wonder that they have held up. I've been told that teeth cannot heal themselves from above gum damages to the enamel

I live in a sparsely populated rural area. My water comes from a stream on the neighboring timberland, so the main concern is biological contamination. I posted about my filtration system recently. The beauty of bananas is that you can get a quick raw meal in just about any grocery store in the U.S. The downside is that it's hard to find natural varieties of this wonderful fruit, except in major markets and we're relegated to Mr. Cavendish's clones. I wonder how many generations the clones are at now? Has anyone on this board studied this? Bananas sure tasted good in Costa Rica on

raw.diva, The type of filter you describe where you pour the water through and store it in the fridge will not work according to what I've researched for flourine. Pur brand states clearly in their literature that their so-called 2 stage filter does not remove fluorine. Fluorine is a tough chemical to remove from water. It is the most reactive chemical element. Boiling water will cause chl

I've been invited to join a group of friends next summer on a 3 day backpack to climb Mount Whitney (14,495')in the California Sierra Nevada Range. I haven't backpacked or climbed for a number of years and was eating SAD last time I did 20 years ago. I have a moderate amount of experience in higher elevations and in the past acclimated easily above 10,000 feet without headaches and nausea. My

Dee, All vinegars are made from the fermentation of ethanol (alcohol) producing acetic acid, a toxic chemical. Humans have been making vinegars for thousands of years for various uses. For human consumption the acid is highly dilute (around 1:19) and often includes the unfiltered "mother", or solids, from the fermentation process. If it has not been pasteurized it is still biologic

I'm on the go away from home a lot too. It's a great way to practice mono eating. Lately it has been satsuma mandarins and romaine lettuce. In the summer lots of watermelon, sometimes just a half melon and a spoon in my cooler bag. I can always throw in a few fresh dates and celery or a quart mason jar of oj or my favorite smoothie. About the fanciest I get lately are banana/date burritos

It all depends on what you anticipate doing with the machine. I've been using several different Cuisinarts for over 25 years. Since becoming raw I don't use my current 11 cup basic model as much preparing food for one. The things I do use it for are preparing pates and grating larger amounts of vegetables. You can sometimes find the basic model online for just over $100.

You can buy a variety of raw olives online from David Wolfe's company. I've had the sundried Peruvian ones and they are good, but expensive. Most commercial olives packed in jars have been pasteurized or heavily salt brined to preserve them, even sundried ones. I don't eat as many now as when I first went raw, but if I do have a taste for them I look for ones at my co-op's olive bar that h
