So you are a fruitarian according to X definition, but why is that a good thing? In other words, what is the logic behind being a fruitarian? If we understand the logic, I think the relevant definition of "fruit" will become apparent. For example, one possible logic to "minimize harm", in which case a "fruit" is any part of the plant that does not "hurt" it

Rob, Yes, I fasted before the test. One explanation that I have thought of is this. I have been water fasting one day every week for the past few months. By now, it is so easy that I don't even notice it. Fasting before the blood test is supposed to bring the levels of all the blood chemicals to a baseline level. However, because I am used to fasting now, maybe it takes longer for them to

So I have been a veg*n for a couple of years and high / 100% raw a month and a half. I had a blood test over a year ago, which came back perfect. Had a blood test now, and there might be a potential problem with triglyceride and cholesterol. - Triglyceride: 159 mg / dl; normal is less than 150; last year was 71!! - Cholesterol: 153 mg / dl; normal is less than 200, but less than 150 is better

I was concerned about this as well. So I've decided to only buy vitamins that are certified by a third party. I know it does not guarantee anything, but it provides an extra level of protection. It is absolutely amazing that the overwhelming majority of supplements, including from top brands, are not certified by any third party. Note that there are *two* USP certifications, which makes t

41. Calcium
The US RDA for calcium is 1,000 mg. McDougall says that people need as little as 150 - 200 mg. Any thoughts? (Scroll down to "False Premise #4".)

Slim, Here are some ideas. When something is forbidden, you naturally have a tendency to want to try it. When you try it, you tend to feel bad, because it was forbidden. (In the case of diet, the feeling is exhaserbated because food itself can influence mood / feeling of well-being.) When you feel bad, you are less likely to adhere to the prohibition. The downward spiral begins. One impo

Yams and sweet potatoes are two totally different root vegetables. However, in many stores in the US, there is a root vegetable sold that is labeled as *both* yam and sweet potato. From the discussion here and here ) * , I assume that when this is the case, the vegetable is, in fact, a sweet potato, not a yam. In that case, I have never actually eaten a yam. * Note that because the URL ends i

Since starting on raw, I have been drinking a lot more smoothies than I used to. This got me thinking. Saliva plays an important role in digestion. Smoothies spend almost no time in the mouth, which means that they might not have enough saliva in them. So the food that I drink might not be as well digested as it should / could be? Is this an issue? Should I be spitting in my smoothies?? )

Anyone here doing calorie restriction? What are your thoughts / experience with it? What about intermittent fasting? Same or greater potential benefits without the weight loss? I know there are people who practice CR -- is there anyone who does IF though? One potential difficulty with IF and raw food could be that it would be difficult to get in enough calories on the free-feeding days. Exper

I am new to raw and, for what it's worth, I do take supplements. I do not know if I will stop in the future, but for now I do take them. I know that they are not raw and probably not even vegetarian. For anyone interested in supplements, here are excellent recommendations: Also, if you do take supplements, be sure that they have been verified by a third party, such as USP:

I would like to learn more about cleanses, especially a liver cleanse. Any information would be helpful. Have you tried them? What was your experience? Which ones did you try? Which would you recommend? Any studies on this? Thanks.

arugula, I truly like the fact that you tie everything back to peer reviewed scientific research. I think if you put your research on a website, a lot of people would find it very helpful. A lot of low protein people (whether raw or not) say that WHO recommends 5% to 10% protein from calories. I have spent a couple of hours searching and could not find a WHO recommendation for protein that

Hi all, I started grinding flax seeds and putting them in smoothies. It works great! I don't know why I didn't do it before. Bryan, I think I am basically eating 811. Lots of fruits. Couple / several green smoothies a day. An avocado some days. And nuts. I might be eating too many nuts for 811.

54. Omega 3
What is the best / easiest way to get your omega 3? I add some flaxseed to my smoothies. However, the flaxseed stays whole -- my blender does not mill it. Does that matter? Should it be milled? How would I do that? I have a Magic Bullet. Another option would be to buy flaxseed meal. But I heard that it loses its omega 3 very quickly.

I would like to find out more about the theory of acidic / alkaline producing foods as well as see a list of these foods. The lists I could on the internet all conflict with each other and provide no references at all. While the theory makes general sense, I would like to read up on it in more medically reputable sources. Thanks.

I buy my food at a regular supermarket. At some point, you might want to consider buying organic. But, especially at first, don't worry about it. For now, just start eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. You will notice that as you eat more of them, you will have less room for the other stuff.

The central text of the HK is the Bhagavad Gita. I really like the BG, and would recommend it to all. It is short and powerful. (good basic translation without many comments) (HK official translation and commentary) It should be understood that just because a religion claims a certain scripture does not mean that that religion follows the scripture properly, whatever that means. But t
