This topic has been on my mind because I live in northern Minnesota, and today, April 26, it was about 32 F, and dreary and windy. People get depressed here because winter goes on and on and on. In the future I'd like to set up my life so that I can go somewhere warm for a couple-few months during winter just to break it up a little, but some jobs don't offer flexibility like that, so I'll have

flax crackers? for me, munching on a flax cracker almost seems like eating bread or "cooked carb" crackers.

That is so thoughtful of you! Personally, if it were me, I would go nuts over actual food - like a gift of an organic pineapple or something I don't normally buy myself. Or if you wanted to go all out, get a recipe for some fancy raw dessert or something (depending on how she eats?) and prepare it! Good luck, how sweet!

I stopped buying the more expensive nuts and instead I eat flaxseed for omega 3's and pepitas (pumpkin seeds) for iron. They are both SO cheap in bulk.

Another thing is, raw food is said to cure (or greatly improve) PMS, and before things get better they can really flare up, like you're "purging" it.

Say I made 8 oz of juice and put it in a 10 oz thermos for a few hours: would that little bit of air matter? thanks, -Lisa

my favorite recently - it tastes like a "milkshake" : 1 cup of nut-milk (I make this first and strain it.) Blend with 1 or 2 frozen bananas (frozen makes a difference - I like the texture) and 1 TBS maca root powder. mmmmm :-)

Personally, instead of weighing anything and making calculations, I'd just look it up. I checked out a book on juicing from the library, and it included a chart of the amount of calories in many many types of juice. Maybe there's a similar chart online?

Could you grow your own when weather permits? Greens are very eaasy to grow, and they don't need a lot of space. And you can always grow lots and lots of sprouts indoors in your kitchen. ** good luck

I had a fun idea, and it worked out pretty well! First I brewed a cup of chai tea (using 2 tea-bags so it would be strong.) Then I chilled the tea in the fridge. I blended the cold tea with 1/3 cup walnuts and 3.5 tsp sweetener. (I used raw honey, but surely dates or agave would work also). Then I strained it all through a nut milk bag, and I'm drinking it now. :-)

you say you feel overly hyper inside: I also feel that way when I drink fresh juice - it gives me a burst of energy that i don't know what to do with, but I've never felt that was a bad thing. Raw food really awakens you. Maybe if you did some kind of yoga or meditation it would help you re-focus. Or, like you suggested, exercise. It takes time for everything to fall into place -- I'm still

Are Walnuts and Pecans, sold in any average grocery store, as likely to be irradiated as almonds are? I have heard so much controversy over almonds, but not over the other nuts. Thanks if anyone knows! -Lisa

I've heard that with a high-speed blender (vitamix) it's much easier to get a texture like whipped cream. good luck!

Hi, I happened upon this thread, and I was wondering if grinding cocoa nibs in a vitamix is more effective than using a coffee grinder. When I grind them in a coffee grinder and then put the powder in a smoothie or nut milk, it's still very gritty. I don't mind much, but I was just wondering if a vitamix would make it more of a fine powder. I don't have one, but does anyone know? thank you!

can't say enough about yoga: It has made me more flexible physically and mentally and emotionally! Just start slowly - enjoy it, don't force it. It took me a year of gentle practice to un-knot myself after years of distance running to the point where I could go deeper into the practice.

I'd like to try using a mushroom as the base of a tiny pizza, as I saw a recipe that mentioned doing this but first marinating the mushroom in a little bit of shoyu. I don't know how to marinate a mushroom, period, and I don't have/use shoyu. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you! -Lisa

I've been going off and on raw for about the last 6 months, and almost exclusively raw for the last few weeks. I've been getting heartburn every morning right after getting up, even if I haven't eaten anything! It's strange, and I've never had this problem before. Can anyone offer any advise or insights? Thank you! -Lisa

I have also heard that raisins used to be made in cast iron pots and they would absorb some iron, and that's why they aquired an association with high iron.

I read Victoria Boutenko's book, 12 Steps to Raw, and she described how she managed to keep her family of 4 raw even when they were struggling financially. She says they went to a lot of U-pick's (pick your own), and they would go to farmers markets (especially at the end of the day when, according to her, prices were lowest as farmers were trying to get rid of everything). They also grew tons

I work at a co-op, and I've inquired to our bulk buyer about the temperatures our dried fruits are dried at. This was over a month ago, and he's still waiting for the various suppliers to get back to him. Seems like an easy one to me, but sometimes tracking down information can be frustrating!

I get this too... with apples and sometimes grapes. Apples often cause sharp pain in my stomach and/or being really bloated and gassy. Too bad, cause I really like apples, but I usually don't eat them anymore. :-) -Lisa

28. Candida
Hello, I am a few days into trying a raw food diet. I have been dealing with candida for a few years, and over time (through dietary measures) it's gotten a lot better but is still not gone. I was really worried that with the raw food approach I'd be eating too much sugar, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I've been experiencing "die-off symptoms" the last few days even though I'v
