The EasyGreen sprouter is an investment, but it operates automatically. I find that the reservoir holds enough water for about two days, so I can even leave for the weekend. If you connect it to your household water and make sure it has a good drain then it could theoretically grow your sprouts from seed to salad without interference.

I've been pondering hanging some vegetables from tree branches. It would be neat if I could put them out of the reach of deer and other garden pests and avoid hassle and look excessive fencing. I'd have to balance them so I can lower them down for tending and harvesting, etc...

P.S. Another reason standard jam lasts longer is because the canning process sterilizes the batch. You won't be able to sterilize, but you should use fruit that is as fresh as possible and wash it well to avoid getting any more mold spores into your jam than you can avoid.

One of the main reasons open jam jars can be kept open in the fridge for ridiculously long times is that the added sugar operates as a preservative. (Think of how long sugar will last at room temperature if you keep it away from the ants.) You may be able to increase the life span of the jam by increasing the sugar content, maybe by mixing in a blended date slurry. As Coco suggested, it won't

Coco, You're right. I will have to try that. Maybe I'll use golden flax to keep the color of the hummus pale.

I like the zucchini hummus too. It's much lighter, so I can eat more of it. The only problem is that making hummus with a veggie base instead of beans or seeds makes it a little more watery, so it doesn't have the same meaty thickness of traditional hummus. When I share it with people it only gets so-so approval. Some day I may try dehydrating some of the zukes first to see if that is an improvem

Some of the earliest evolution of life on Earth isn't really understood. I find it logical to imagine that the evolutionary schism between plants and animals probably occurred around the single-cell organism stage or not much after. Since micro-organisms don't leave fossils, I think that this era is mostly theory and guesswork.

I use wide mouth canning jars too. They're cheap, easy to clean, the glass is non-reactive and they don't leak. I like stainless steel bottles, but they aren't as easy to clean with their narrow mouths and I can't see inside enough to know how clean they are, so I rarely use them for anything but water. Rawrnr is right about light being damaging to vitamins, but I feel fine about carrying my smoo

I think colonoscopy is a comparatively safe diagnostic procedure. Here's an article about what can go wrong with colonoscopy and it sounds like the rates of complication are extremely low: If your doctor feels that a colonoscopy is indicated, I would feel that the possibility of identifying a dangerous condition probably outweighs the slight risk. As with most medical procedures, it's best

Regarding nutrients destroyed by the heat, many vitamins break down from cooking. The loss is greater for harsher cooking methods (e.g. more loss from deep frying than steaming), so a temperature increase where it's debatable whether cooking has occurred, the vitamin loss should be even less. Even after a great deal of cooking, vitamins do remain. As I understand it, minerals are all still pre

100% raw is a difficult thing to define, and if you aspire to being 100% you'll have to decide what that means to you. Many of the pasteurized almonds will still sprout, so it's left to the individual to decide whether this fits our personal understanding of "raw" or "living". For myself, I feel that my diet is more raw when I'm getting most of it from my local produce depa

The question of food combining rules with respect to green smoothies has been raised a number of times. The consensus seems to be that greens can be freely combined with just about anything, so the combination of fruit and greens is not a problem. On the other hand, many people argue that adding other things like nuts, seeds or veggies may be bad combining. As with all food combining advice, e

Well, I've been using the 8006, and if the 8004 is the same machine except for color then that sounds like a real winner. Please let us know how you find it. Does the fact that it's white mean the casing is plastic instead of chrome? For $40 that sounds like a deal I would have taken!

I was pretty sure it was supposed to be a joke, but I'm afraid I just don't see it. Sorry. I didn't mean to come across as argumentative, so I'm sorry if I did.

I'm confused. Are you implying that the average 80-10-10'er has difficulty recognizing fresh mangoes and bananas? That makes the kind of sense that's not.

The last couple of years I have tried to go berry picking throughout the summer in order to start the winter with a freezer full of my own berries. It's not nearly as nice as fresh, but it's well worth the effort. Now that we're heading into spring, it's a good thing to start to keep in mind. Many berries will have very short seasons once they're ready, and it's important to find a U-pick place a

That's interesting, Horsea. I know that hemp products are heavily imported to the US from Canada, but I didn't know what the regulatory structure is in Canada. Can you get the hemp seed and tell the government that they can stop by and inspect your sprouting sill to make sure you aren't growing marijuana sprouts? It might even make sense for them to allow it. If the concern is that you will hi

1. It's illegal to grow hemp in the US. The official reason (as I understand it) is that hemp plants look too much like marijuana plants and might confuse drug enforcement. I've also heard that the decision was made with significant input from the cotton industry, which feared the competition. Hemp seed that is legally sold in the US will be damaged in some way to keep it from sprouting. I buy he

You got some pretty nice photos there, but it's still hard for me to tell from the photos. Hopefully you'll get more responses from others who are more experienced with wheatgrass. It looks to me like it might be the normal feathery root feelers. Here's a photo I took years ago of the root feelers on some young radish sprouts: edit: The photo was a little too big, so here's a smaller version.

Haven't I heard on this very forum that many sweet potatoes are toxic when eaten raw?

That's an interesting video, WY. It made me curious to know more about that KitchenAid. My objection is that both tests they ran were of a particular type of blender abuse - the too-big object tests how well the blender can move a huge object within range of its blades. That's useful and interesting, but I would have liked to see some testing with some other difficult situations: blending without

I think this is right, Loeve. Water that has been chemically sterilized can benefit by sitting in the sun. Chlorine can be reduced, etc... Water that has not been sterilized can grow stagnant sitting in the sun as the stillness and the warmth of the sun create a comfortable environment for most living things that might be in the water to expand and reproduce. Until water springs from the ea

My first instinct was to say that drying would be best, but then I found this web page which not only goes into the particulars of drying mushrooms, but spends some time on freezing and other preservation strategies. It seems like a good summary.

The biggest Waring carafe I see online is 64 oz, which is the size that comes with the MX1000XT. Vitamix doesn't seem to make anything over 64 oz either, so Blendtec may be the only option for those who need to blend more than half a gallon at once.

If you want a high power blender for a little less, the Waring XTreme MX1000XT is worth considering too. It's a very powerful machine (3.5 HP), but otherwise is comparatively no-frills. I've been using mine for a couple of years, and it has been a workhorse. The Waring carafe is actually a little easier to clean than the Vitamix because there's more room to reach fingers and a sponge around and u

> As far as a tamper goes; can't you get all the > food to blend/pull down into the blade by pulsing > the unit when starting? Usually. When the contents of the blender are very thick or very frozen, they may tend to clump in blender and not fall within reach of the blades. The pulse feature kicks the blade speed up to high (so it doesn't do anything if you're already running on hi

I have been using the Waring MX1000XT for a couple of years now, and it hasn't given me any trouble at all in that time. I definitely think it's a good purchase. It was a good bargain then, and the price has gone down since then. (I think the design has changed slightly, so I *hope* that quality hasn't decrease with the price.) I occasionally wish I had a tamper like like the one the Vitamix o

I've never tried juicing one. I did once try to eat one raw, and found it pretty inedible.
