I grow pea shoots and sunflower greens using no special technology, just natural sunlight from a skylight. I'm still harvested a lot in the dead of winter. Chickory

Hi Mona, I've also read that you can put a box or basket or erect a sun barrier to protect the plants during the middle of the day, when the sun is at its height. When ordering seeds, look for varieties in catalogs described as heat tolerant or bolt resistent. Like Dave wrote, many leafy greens prefer cool weather, so again, check in seed catalogs for plants that grow mid-summer. Chickory

Hi, The purpose of the enzyme inhibitor is to allow beans, nuts, and seeds to remain dormant (in a dry and non-growing state) and not rot until the conditions are right for them to grow. The seed/nut/bean is produced by the mother plant in the autumn, is dormant through the winter, then starts to grow in the spring when there is sufficent moisture and warmth. Basically, all seeds/nuts/beans th

My expereince- although some of the chickpeas are sprouting, some are not, and those are the ones that are rotting. You need to get a better source of chickpeas. I've had good experiences with chickpeas from Indian and Pakistani groceries- chana is the word they use for chickpeas, and they have different kinds. The black or brown chana sprout well without the funk. Chickory

Hi, Yes, I, too, am learning about all the edible plants growing around us, but hesitate to eat stuff growing from polluted soil. If you live in an area that has had houses there for a while, the soil may have lead and other toxins from residents scraping old paint off before repainting. If the yard is next to a street with a lot of car traffic, the soil is polluted from car exhaust. What kin

When I first went raw I dropped alot of weight quickly, BMI around 17- typical detox symptom. Although I intellectually understood it was detox, people's reaction- that I was sick, I was anorexic, got to me, and I ate alot- 8 meals a day, but was still skinny. After a year, lo and behold, I gained weight eating just 3-4 small meals a day. Now my BMI stays around 20. It's hard to trust that th

Hi Shellbi, Acrylamide is a carcinogen formed by heating carbohydrates to a high temperature- for example, baked breads, deep-fried potatoes, potato chips, and pizza crust. The presense of acrylamide in cooked carbohydrates was first publisized by Swedish scientists in 2002. The issue has been considered so important that the United Nations and the World Health Organization established a joint

I grow micro-greens indoors- sunflower, peas (need whole green peas), and buckwheat in a shallow container with just a sprinkling of soil on the bottom. Sprouts you can grow in jars include clover, alfalfa, mustard, broccoli, and radish- put them in the sun a few days after they have sprouted to green up their leaves. Directions for micro-greens and sprouts are at A cheaper mail order sourc

Goitergenic foods contain compounds that inhibit the absorption of iodine, which in turn can foster the development of thyroid problems, such as goiters. For more info, see past postings on this board. These compounds, present in raw cruciferous veggies, such as cabbage and broccoli, are rendered inactive by cooking. I'm wondering if fermentation does the same. Chickory

My partner's bloodwork has several times shown a low ferritin level. Supplementation didn't help much, nor did eating high iron foods in large quantities. However, when she ate smaller meals, her ferritin level shot up, as well as her B12. Eating excessive amounts of food inhibits absorption. There is so much food in one's digestive tract, it gets pushed through without being well absorbed.

After reading your post and thinking about it overnight, I recall that my partner, who had not eaten many vegetables ( although she had been a vegan for twenty years) and had some serious illnesses before going raw, had a hard time digesting raw greens at first. It took several months of persistant eating of raw greens before she could tolerate them well. I had a much easier time because I had

Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, mustard, kale family) contain a chemical that inhibits the absorption of iodine, which affects the thyroid gland. I know one woman who developed a goiter from juicing a lot of broccoli. Many if not most foods have something that affects something else, so I try to eat a variety of vegetables to balance things out. I've read that foragers

Hi, In addition to a raw foods' diet, what has made a big difference to my facial features is low sodium- no additional salt, not even celtic sea salt, although I do sometimes sprinkle a liitle dulse or kelp on salads. The combination of raw, no salt has gotten rid of puffiness, made my cheeks more contoured, smoothed out wrinkles and creases, makes my eyes look more prominent. I definately lo

I think a high greens diet is wonderful and fantastic, but we need to have variety. Our forager asncestors had access to over a hundred different kinds of plants. The development of agriculture has a tendency towards just a few kinds of crops, a tendency increased by modern economics. Chickory

Hi Piano Gal, I'm careful about goitergenic veggies, but I don't avoid them, I have some meals with them and some meals without. I've learned that there's no one perfect food. We should aim for variety and balance. Non-goitergenic green veggies that I eat include dandelion greens, clover sprouts, sunflower and pea greens, lettuce, endive, and escorol. A farmers' market nearby offers somethin

I remember pulling radishes straight out of the garden, rinsing them with a garden hose, and eating them right there in the garden. About childhood diet- I think my father developing diabetes helped me be healthier and liking vegetables. After he was diagnosised, my mother sudden started serving more vegetables and fruits, so I got accostomed to eating them. Chickory

Hi Rosemary, My partner had bad thyroid test results (High THS- thyroid stimulating hormone). At the time she was eating mostly or all cruciferous vegetables- cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower. At that time, we discovered in a mainstream book giving data about mineral contents of foods, that cruciferous veggies contain a substance that inhibits the absorption of iodine, which would lead to

Hi, Raw can be very cheap or very expensive. Fruit tends to drive up the expense. Pre-packaged raw or live nut and fruit bars, dehydrated crackers, etc, are also very expensive and unnecessary. I think leafy green vegetables and sprouts are healthier, and they are much cheaper. I spend about $3-$5 per day on food, depending on food chocies, availability, my sprouting schedule, and current pr

1. Why have you chosen to eat all/mostly raw foods? My partner started to deal with a serious health problem without surgery or medication. The rationale sounded logical, so I followed, and found many health issues, aches and pains have disappeared on raw, and I feel much healthier. 2. How long have you been eating this way? 4 years 3. Do you consider yourself to be part of the vegan

Hi Mona, This is the best book I've found so far about sdproutingL Sprout Garden: Indoor Grower's Guide to Gourmet Sprouts by Mark Braunstein. I've found clover seeds to be less prone to rotting than alfalfa- the important thing is to rinse out the hulls once the sprouts are well grown, especially in warm weather. Broccoli is quite tasty. Radish and fenugreek are easy sprouters. Chickory
