Prism, Firstly I hope that you feel better and get healthier, thats whats important. I don't know how much iodine is consumed in the standard Japanese diet. Whatever it is, I am sure that most of them are not going out of their way to get massive amounts of iodine. The amounts they consume must be from the seaweed, fish and other ocean foods they depend upon so much. I don't know what other fact

Prism, Do you mean 50 mcg (micrograms)? not miligrams (mg) Anything greater than 2mg per day. Daily recommendations are generally in the micrograms. I personally would seek professional supervision for intakes in the 50mg range, especially of elemental iodine. I've experiemented with indium supplementation, and I got some insomnia and other symptoms. I now have a personal policy of

Prism, Here is some information about seaweeds. One of the best sources of iodine is kelp, and that is widely available. Even nori sheets are a fanastic source of iodine. You probably don't need an isolated iodine supplement because one particular type of seaweed isn't available. There are plenty still available. Plus you will get additional minerals, vitamins, fiber etc from whole food sou

Superjuicer, Here is an opinion from the web about raw food and vitamin supplements. I know its not a raw and vegan expression, but just imagine the principle being the same. uman Requirements What are human vitamin / mineral requirements ? Nobody can tell, now nor ever. Simply because the need for vitamins and minerals depends on - the consumed foods - the

Prism, No its not off topic at all. Food and raw food especially. This is a living foods webpage. I think that many people are suffering in the world from low levels of iodine, but also from other trace elements. Sea vegetables, algae, kelps etc are great sources of iodine, and also other elements needed for health. Isolated elements may help specific identified deficiencies, but I found out that

Toxicity to animals There is documented evidence that animals such as cats, dogs, cattle, goats, rabbits, birds, and fish can be severely harmed or even killed when they consume the avocado leaves, bark, skin, or pit. The avocado fruit is poisonous to birds in some cases, so on a practical level feeding the fruit to birds should be avoided. Avocado leaves contain a toxic fatty acid derivativ

I compost avo pits, or I plant them. They usually sprout and grow for a season, and then die because the light and temp conditions aren't right for my area. But I believe they decompose faster this way to make fertilizer. But apparently thats not really a problem. Edible or not, avo pits do not sound choice. I hope that they aren't poison to whoever is eating them.

2200. Waking up!
I feel like I am waking up! I wish more people would as well. I always knew the value of having high quality food, and I made that a priority for most of my life. But how one views quality is very, very relative. After moving to a new location, my sense of what is acceptible changed somewhat. Mostly because it was much more difficult to eat purely fresh food. Its also not in the consciousness

If the local supermarket was unable to recieve shipped food what would you do? Is there enough local food in your area to support your community? Say within 100miles of where you live? I'm asking because a friend of mine was talking about the price of oil potentially reaching $150 a barell, which would impact all aspects of modern life, especially in cities. Just something to think about, eve

Fuzzysox, Anyone who does not go along with common ideas about food, or other aspects of life are likey to meet some curious questions, or criticisms. I think this topic has been covered a lot on the board, and the best response I have heard yet is to accept that you may not always get loving acceptance and approval. Expect to be misunderstood by at least a few people sometime. It doesn't me

12% fat in watermelon? Thats got to be by calories. How much are in other fruits? So, if one went on a melon monodiet, one would consume slightly too much fat for 8/1/1? It would be close however. Much closer to that ideal than the standard american diet. And that cart of fruit photo looks interesting, but at the same time it makes my teeth hurt. For some reason, for certain fruits I get the

why discount Japan for longevity? Whats interesting is India at around 62 years of age for longevity. If any country comes even close to being vegetarian, wouldn't it be India?

wow, I didn't say anthing about overall lifestyle? I guess that part is too difficult to overlook. Any small countries with short life spans? I didn't look at that list too well. One thing for sure is that poverty, war, malnutrition will shorten ones life. By looking at the 10 lowest countries.

My best friend in the world is really uncomfortable with summerheat symptoms. He had some severe heat stroke several years ago, and has been sensitive ever since. Hes at home with the fan on, resting, taking cool showers etc. He wants to get AC, which is overbudget for him. I also don't know if its really needed, as he complains about heat even at 70-75 F, and its about 90 now outside. Maybe he n

Anaken, With commitment I think quality of information has something to do with things. I have also seen people who avoid avocados because it has a lot of fat, and then they get a large plate of french fries.

is this a sudden change in diet? That can cause some problems that you describe. Sometimes even foods that are supposed to promote bm can cause that if they are suddenly consumed when you aren't used to that. Stuff like that happened to me before, but it was usually from a sudden change. It ended coming out in a large glob, so don't be suprised.

Are there more subtle signs to look to before ones bodies get cancer or other illness? For a lot of people its not toxic, poison or bad for us unless it rather immediately does obvious harm. Its possible that even a hard core sad eater is experiencing these things, but just doesn't know what is being experienced. For instance, when I first tried raw, I didn't like not having a heavy feeling after

Dpes anyone know about attempts to use the five element theory from Traditional chinese medicine in raw foods? What about raw preparations for herbs? Indian medicine seems to be more compatible with raw and vegan ideals, input on those adaptions would be great to hear about as well. Thank you

Anaken, What are obvious harmfuls? I think thats a matter of perspective, and personal needs isn't it? For example, I know people who think that 'Wonder bread" is a health food, because it has added vitamins, and its not sweet, and when they made a sandwhich, they didn't use mayo. To a vegan, meat and dairy are the ultimate evil, but many people still consider them required food stuffs fo

Dougyfresh, Thank you for starting this thread. I was going to start one asking a similar question about Indian medicine and TCM. I always found that pretty strange how both of those don't recommend raw food for some conditions. In some cases no raw food at all. A diet of lightly cooked organic fresh food is more difficult to keep an a raw diet. Because you have to eat it immediately, and its

Did someone mention some connection between food and crime? For instance, I thought I heard someone mention that cooked foods reported to have been eaten before some major crime sprees. The connection seems fairly weak, as so many people eat cooked food. More specifically are animal foods credited with causing more disturbed states of mind? Also do you believe that particular nutrients which

And, why do most people want really sweet sweet fruit with no real flavor? It seems like growers breed up stuff to taste like it has corn syrup.
