I had sugar cane juice at a raw foods demo by Khepra Anu, a raw food chef here in DC. He had a special juicer that he got from someplace in the tropics (I think in Jamaica or maybe Puerto Rico). The juice is intensely sweet.

This question gets asked a lot on raw forums. It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to work in a raw restaurant or cafe, actual restaurant experience of any kind can carry more weight than having a raw chef cert. Sarma Melngailis (owner of Pure Food and Wine in NYC) and Raw Chef Dan (owner of Quintessence raw food restaurant in NYC) have both said that they'd rather take someo

I got a Hurom (same juicer--Omega just puts their brand name on it.) I love it. Easy to assemble/disassemble, cleanup is easy, and the pulp is quite dry. It also doesn't take up much space on my countertop which is a major consideration for me. I got it primarily to make green juice (kale, romaine, collards, chard, parsley and cilantro, cucumber, celery, ginger, and a little bit of apple)

Can't address all your questions, but ... If you didn't like that mushroom recipe, try another one. A lot of mushroom recipes call for the use of nama shoyu or Bragg's--maybe you are having a reaction to that. I see that the stuffed mushroom recipe on this site that you mentioned calls for TWO TABLESPOONS of Bragg's!!!!! Yikes! I would use *maybe* 1/4 teaspoon, and add more in little incre

I do Bikram myself. I don't think you need to eat additional food. The big thing for me is electrolyte replacement. I bring coconut water with me to drink after each class, because you will sweat buckets.

I was vegetarian for decades before going raw. My weight before going raw was slender (not skinny), but my cholesterol was on the high end of normal because of eating dairy and eggs. I cut those things out and went raw, and the next blood test I had 6 months later showed a more than 50 point drop in "bad" cholesterol levels and triglycerides and an increase in my "good" chol

Some people swear by the Emotional Freedom Technique. Tons of info about it on the web, and there are videos on YouTube demonstrating the technique--it's a form of accupressure where you tap the same meridians in the body that are used in accupuncture. It couldn't hurt, and it's completely non-invasive and drug-free.

Bravissima, Jodi! Your doggie is adorable. That's great that you saw the beauty in him and adopted him. My husband and I adopted an old cat 2 years ago--he is about 18 now. He has added so much to our lives and we're really blessed to be giving him his final home.

No. Dehydrators are completely optional, in my opinion. I don't have one (no room) and don't prepare the kind of raw meals where a dehydrator is a necessity. If I get a jones for raw crackers or raw granola, I buy 'em at the health food store.

I bought a high-speed blender (a BlendTec) over a year ago. It's been well worth it. I would advise you to get your VitaMix before replacing your juicer or getting a new dehydrator. I don't use a dehydrator myself, and you can use your blender to make juice--whiz the fruits or veggies in the blender and squeeze everything it through a strainer (I use a nut milk bag). In fact, I'd recommend

Some people would have you believe that expensive appliances, exotic superfoods, supplements, etc. are a necessity to eat raw. That's nonsense. A dehydrator and a juicer are not necessary. You can make juice with your VitaMix and strain the liquid through cheesecloth or a nut milk bag (or a paint straining bag); you can juice citrus fruits with a fork or a manual juicer (I have one of those pyr

I go to a naturopath who is a graduate of Bastyr University, one of the accredited schools of naturopathic medicine. In Washington DC, where I live, naturopaths are licensed and can be consulted just like a 'regular' MD. She doesn't prescribe pharmaceuticals (naturopaths don't do that); rather she makes suggestions about diet and supplements. For bloodwork, she sends me to a LabCorp office nea

I agree with flipperjan--why are you going on a low calorie raw regimen when you are breastfeeding? Breastfeeding increases your metabolism and you will need more calories and nutrients, not fewer. Unless I didn't understand your question?

Turmeric is a major, major anti-inflammatory. It's a wonderful herb and "conventional" medicine is getting with the program. There have been studies that show that turmeric really helps with arthritis pain (arthritis is inflammation of the joints.) So perhaps it could help you too. Here is some info: I am guessing that you could take the turmeric powder and put it in cap

I never mix fruit with my green smoothies (except for avocado and tomato). I take a green smoothie for lunch almost every day. I make it with 2 cups water, spinach, lettuce, kale, cilantro, parsley, other fresh herbs, garlic, ginger, 1/2 avocado, a tomato, sometimes some hot pepper, sometimes 1/2 a cucumber, sometimes some broccoli, and a bit of salt. It is more like a blended salad, I guess.

Pistachio is absolutely right. It's sad but true that it can threaten others when someone makes a major life change for the better (weight loss, going back to school, etc.). It just points out that change can happen; it takes motivation and will-power. Your co-workers clearly lack those things, and you are taking them out of their comfort zone by making these positive changes in your health.

I almost never make sweet green smoothies. Instead, I make savory ones and pack the blender full of kale, spinach, lettuce, chard, collards, herbs, tomato, avocado, sprouts, garlic, lemon or lime juice, etc. etc. etc. Even though I have a BlendTec I make my smoothies in stages, and I am quite sure I pack a pound of greens into each smoothie. I also eat lots of salads, use greens as wraps, etc.

Your cat can be raw, but not vegan. Cats are carnivores, as you said, and they need taurine, which they get from meat. If they don't get taurine, they will go blind. From Wikipedia: "Taurine is essential for cat health, as cats cannot synthesize the compound. The absence of taurine causes a cat's retina to slowly degenerate, causing eye problems and (eventually) irreversible blindness
