<<When God said Let there be light, the creation was complete, all that was left was for it to unfold into the Universe we see now.>> The critical problem with that line of thinking is that in attempting to explain the origin of the universe and life - a very complex question - you are assuming the existence of an abstract being which is even more complex than the original question

QuoteHow Smart Is the Octopus?Bright enough to do the moving-rock trick. By Carl Zimmer Updated Monday, June 23, 2008, at 1:14 PM ET Aristotle didn't have a high opinion of the octopus. "The octopus is a stupid creature," he wrote, "for it will approach a man's hand if it be lowered in the water." Twenty-four centuries later, this "stupid" creature is enjoying

A physics professor in Cambridge has written a book about sustainable energy were he puts numbers to everything that is talked about today in vague terms. How much energy do we need? Can renewables cover this demand? In what way? How about new technologies? Looks at every conceivable option, does a pretty thorough job and explains things very clearly. Geared towards the general public,

The key is to get a balance of electrolytes. If you enter your daily menu here you can see how much you are getting of each. The main ones are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate and chloride. The first three are quite important for muscle and nerve function. Cheers, J

Hey maui butterfly, thanks for the article! Hey arugula, yes, I would say health is "quality of life" which includes freedom from disease and good energy levels. I wouldn't necessarily say it is the one which provides the absolute greatest longevity, although I might change my mind as I get older Did he give any reason as to why cooked would improve the qualities of fruits and v

Yes, it's a hoax, not possible to do that with normal cell phones under normal conditions. I use a cell phone almost exclusively and use (wired) headphones pretty much all of the time when I speak on my phone to avoid higher doses of radiation getting near my head. There's quite a few long term studies surfacing lately on the damage from cell/wireless phone radiation which is important to b

QuoteWhere did all the fish go? The sea was not so vast, once we deployed an industrial armada against it. By Moises Velasquez-Manoff Early European explorers to the Americas encountered an astounding abundance of marine life. White beluga whales, now limited to the arctic, swam as far south as Boston Bay. Cod off Newfoundland were so plentiful that fishermen could catch them with nothi

QuoteANN ARBOR, Mich.—Organic farming can yield up to three times as much food on individual farms in developing countries, as low-intensive methods on the same land—according to new findings which refute the long-standing claim that organic farming methods cannot produce enough food to feed the global population. Researchers from the University of Michigan found that in developed countr

As much as banks and financial institutions are inherently damaging the way they are currently set up (I'm referring to fractional reserve banking, central banking and in general the charging of interest), there are some banks which are better than others. In the UK, there are these two that I know of: The Co-operative Bank Triodos Bank They avoid investing in or buying shares/stock

Excellent article describing one of the most important and significant experiments providing support for evolution beyond a reasonable doubt. I hope this will dispel any lingering doubts or myths surrounding evolution and natural selection. I would agree, although certainly not an expert, my best guess is that a baby is best served by strengthening it's immune system through breast milk and close contact with the mother and father, as well as a certain degree of food hygiene once older. I think this will give it greater immunological benefits than vaccines, which contain many toxic compounds, especially for an infant. I'm not sure i

The place I went to had individual rooms with a floatation tank, place to leave your clothes and a shower, and they provided ear plugs, as well as a neck air cushion if you wanted to keep your ears totally above the water, and also vaseline to cover minor cuts. The water is actually only about ten inches deep, but so saturated with salts that you won't touch the bottom when you lie down in it. I

I've tried this before, they're called floatation tanks here in the UK. Really relaxing and cool experience, did it for an hour and it was really cool, totally relaxing sensation. It must be great for athletes to recover from exertions, and also probably for pregnant women, to relax their backs a bit too. Very invigorating I found. Here's where I went Definitely recommend it Cheers, J

Hey David, well done on the tests. I'm certainly not an expert but I probably wouldn't worry about the slightly low vit. D values too much. If we assume some kind of correlation between the values in the blood and the stored quantities of vit. D in the body, it could very well just be a seasonal thing, as someone who does not supplement or ingest vit. D regularly would be expected to have the
