Instead of taxing, I think a better solution would be to remove farm subsidies so that fast food wouldn't turn out to be so "cheap" after all, letting the free market determine the prices of different foods. This way people are less taxed, can spend their extra money as they see fit, junk food is not as cheap, and the market isn't distorted in favour of these processed foods. Cheers,

Hey wong, Sorry about the delay in replying, I've been meaning to get back to this thread for a while. You're right when you say that we are incapable of seeing most of the matter of the Universe with our own eyes. Our eyes are only sensitive to a narrow range of the electromagnetic spectrum, namely those wavelengths which, due to their utility on this planet, we have evolved to appreciate. S

Hey ltf, nice to have you back. I think your point is well made, so in the same sense that there is not much that studying your dog can say about me, there is not much that studying the bible (Torah, Koran, etc..) can say about the existence of A spiritual power. What studying the bible (Torah, Koran, etc..) can tell you is a lot about the non-existence of a PARTICULAR spiritual power, the one th

QuoteThen God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; If one reads the Old Testament one finds many instances of ritual human and animal sacrifices. It is only by cherry picking from the Bible that one can hope to extract anything positive from it. And who deci

Hey coco, thanks, just trying to clear up a few things which people sometimes fall for. This article describes how this religious professor has a more reasonable stance on evolution, and claims that it is more compatible with religious faith. Interesting article I read recently. Tentative explanation of how the fusion of white blood cells with tumours can help explain metastasis, or the spread of the tumours. If tumours were somehow supplemental detox/storage organs, then this cooperation with the body's immune system would make sense too. QuoteScientists at Yale provide explanation for how cancer spreads Metastasis, the spread

QuoteThe God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction. Jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic-cleanser; a misogynistic homophobic racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal…. From The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins. If you read the Old Testament, you will f

<<But it is not out of bounds to point out that the modern times articulator of evolution ( evolution has been believed throughout time, in various forms), Darwin himself, accepted eugenics.>> When you make assertions like this you should at least provide some evidence. Do you have any? A good place to get you started on this topic is the following article, with references there

It's an interesting thought, I would have to learn more about it before making any conclusions. <<It happens a lot easier when we get old and everything is breaking down slowly slowly and not functioning normally but the damaged and abnormally functioning cells are accumulating. >> If tumours were somehow "detox/storage organs" then it would make sense that older peopl

Interesting article. QuoteMore so than in any other area of human behavior, the world of politics is firmly and irretrievably grounded in contradictions and illusions. If you were to ask others to identify the purposes for which governments were created, you would likely get the response: "to protect our lives, liberty, and property from both domestic and foreign threats." This is an

Hey David, Hope you are well and well done on the blood test I suppose It would be interesting if you had the results of some blood tests before you went raw, since if I remember right I think you said you had high blood pressure and borderline heart problems then. Hey, that's cool. I'm actually growing some spinach and a sunflower on my windowsill as a little experiment right now (and also have some raspberry, blueberry and blackcurrant bushes on the go too!) I didn't soak or sprout them at all beforehand, just put them in the soil and started watering them The spinach has been growing for about six weeks, and the sunflower for about four. Sinc

As usual the justification for these kinds of things is "technical" reasons: in this case they claim there "aren't enough" human eggs to go around and also it's "easier" to extract animal eggs. I agree that of their supposed goal of learning about certain chronic diseases they will learn very little if anything with this approach. Cheers, J

This is a good idea: trying to rehabilitate people via nature instead of just punishing them. QuoteHere’s an island prison that’s about as distant in principle from Alcatraz as is it in location. Bastoey Island, about 45 miles south of Oslo, hosts some of Norway’s worst offenders in what is effectively an eco-village working holiday camp. Instead of the traditional barred cells, pris

Interesting article Quote Human noses 'can detect danger' Our noses can quickly learn to link even subtle changes in smell with danger, claim scientists. Volunteers who could not differentiate between two similar smells found they could do it easily after being given a mild electric shock alongside one. Brain scans confirmed the change in the "smelling" part of the brain.
