Just curious...

As a raw-vegan, are you primarily concerned with your own health or the ethics of veganism (lessening cruelty and environmental damage)? I believe they are inexorably linked, but I am definitely identified with ethics first and then the health part comes secondary. I think primarily focusing the goal of perfect health can be damaging because it is an ego-centric endeavor. We are all fleeting and to become too preoccupied with our body may cut one off from the really important things. Plus, working towards the health of the planet and helping others is food for the spirit and a healthy spirit is an integral part of a healthy body. I am just curious of others thoughts on this.

My illness, and my child's illness, led me to veganism. My ethics don't matter if I don't have my health. The two are so intertwined that I couldn't seperate them in order to put one above the other.

health first for me. i can't do much if i'm not in a good healthy state. it's like being on an airplane in an emergency, they say to put the oxygen mask on yourself first, then try to help those around you. otherwise you might pass out from lack of oxygen and then you'd all suffer!
my mom was really into the "think globally, act locally" movement when it first came about and i believe those principles are a terrific place to start. first myself, then my family, then my home, my community, my province, counrty, continent, and finally the world. i don't think it works as well in the opposite direction. though i do believe as pakd4fun stated that my own personal health and my ethics are very closely connected.

Ethics first, health second.

I agree with Coco. I believe in leading by example, and also that our bodies are our highest temple. The healthier one allows their body to become, the easier it is to cultivate outward benelovlence. I hold the welfare of animals and our planet in extremely high regard, but as the others above suggest, I feel that my assistence to it is interconnected with my own welbeing.

putting animals and environment first is inconceivable

humans have the MOST impact on the earth

not animals and not plants
plants are sessile

animals don't litter

human beings need to have a HUGE FOCUS on their OWN alignment

animals are already aligned
so are the members of the plant kingdom

if human beings take great care to clean up their internal ecology
it naturally follows that they will also wish to be superior stewards of their external environment

human beings who pollute their own bodies with cigarettes, alcohol, junk food
television commercials, etc. and then spend gargantuan amounts of time fighting for animal rights and the environment strike me as

a conundrum

as well as an enigma

i could use other euphemisms

but i won't

Right! LaV is straight on. The key is not to achieve 'perfect health' but perfect non-attachment....to either one: having health or not having health. Have truly peaceful people....and the 'world' is cured....trying to 'heal' the world any other way is a stop-gap measure at best. I certainly agree with you Joanne that helping others can be a great way to go beyond the self.....and bring peace.

Mmmm.... this is something that is taking on new meaning for me as well. I'm noticing that I have to alter my way of thinking or the focus of my general attention in order to be comfortable eating in a manner that premotes health. I believe that what david has just said is also true of healing the planet, it has got to start with your own mind !!!

It is so awesome to know that there are people out there who either know, or are starting to realise this.

Ha! Yes....a bit of a co-incidence Lav! I was thinking of another U2 lyric in relation to this post: "A man melts the sand so he can see the world outside." Heh...heh.
