Next Great Depression? MIT study predicting ‘global economic collapse’ by 2030 still on track

A renowned Australian research scientist says a study from researchers at MIT claiming the world could suffer from a "global economic collapse" and "precipitous population decline" if people continue to consume the world's resources at the current pace is still on track, nearly 40 years after it was first produced.

*Yawn* No offense, and I do believe in conservation, but I fail to really understand what they mean by that. "...nearly 40 years after it was first produced." WHAT? The world's resources? Makes little sense to me. And we could have a global collapse way sooner than that and it would have nothing to do with resources but simply the 1% hoarding more and more. The thing that is so nonsensical is that for those in the upper echelons (and it really doesn't take all that much to be in that elite group: 300K might even do it and I am sure we all know people in that bracket) life will be hell if the imbalance keeps growing, but it will also be hell for the 1%. The people who qualify as "rich" cannot live in a bubble and the more wage disparity there is, the more chaos there will be.

nanners,

The original study predicts that scarcity of resources that are treated as commodities will cause markets based on this system to collapse. The models appear to still be relevant[on course]. I always try to keep in mind that the upper eschelon can afford space flight off this planet and the messes they have created with their fungible assets hocus pocus sad smiley

It's all about intelligent use of resources.

We'll never run out and we've got plenty, we've got enough for double the world's population... if we use them intelligently. Urban gardens, line the streets with fruit trees, stop slashing and burning valuable rainforest to feed factory farmed meat... you know.

Vegan is one fantastic step in the right direction! smiling smiley

WHAT = the study. It was made 40 years ago.

I think it's a little more complicated than that.
