Date: June 11, 2009 12:39AM ..the oversized hand is more of a curiosity to me. I googled the statue and learned that the original master sculptor died while only completing the lower portion, then Michaelangelo was commissioned to finished the upper. A possible symbolic explanation is that it is the right hand of God (acting through David) that defeated Goliath.

Date: June 11, 2009 03:02PM Thanks, loeve. When I took art history in college, and the instructor mentioned the disproportionate hand and head, the little girl in me was like, Vindication! Actually, very young children, typically the three to early four-year-olds, are very visual detail oriented, so I guess that's why I noticed it way back then.
Today, I'm used to the "irregularities" of this strapping lad, and think him among the most beautiful of all works in the round : ) Re: Michelangelo’s David

Date: June 12, 2009 03:28AM ..I saw a beautiful reproduction as an adult at the Louvre but did not pick up on the scale artistry till pondering mmmveg's post..
