Hey, no kidding, 'David's' physique looks almost exactly like my husband's, who is 65! Between running marathons for several years and working out and lifting weights at the gym since 1980, he's a 'lean & mean' muscle machine.

Interesting responces... I don't see the humour in this much at all. I definately don't view it with any distaste though, it is just something that strikes me as being somehow profound and a little sadening.

Any time I get to look at Michelangelo's David I am happy. I think it is so beautiful. I think it is my favorite work of art. Perfection for me.

Who says boys aren't beautiful? They are not just utilitarian, as Elaine on Seinfeld said.

I have a beautiful boy!

..David's proportions are finally in balance.. he always had that large right
hand which was chiseled out of scale by the sculptors.. now he's poifect!

The hand thing has always bothered me, loeve, even when I was a little girl.

..the oversized hand is more of a curiosity to me. I googled the statue and learned that the original master sculptor died while only completing the lower portion, then Michaelangelo was commissioned to finished the upper. A possible symbolic explanation is that it is the right hand of God (acting through David) that defeated Goliath.

You were one observant little girl to pick that up!

Thanks, loeve. When I took art history in college, and the instructor mentioned the disproportionate hand and head, the little girl in me was like, Vindication! Actually, very young children, typically the three to early four-year-olds, are very visual detail oriented, so I guess that's why I noticed it way back then.

Today, I'm used to the "irregularities" of this strapping lad, and think him among the most beautiful of all works in the round : )

..I saw a beautiful reproduction as an adult at the Louvre but did not pick up on the scale artistry till pondering mmmveg's post..

Stanford has done computer imaging and photography on the original..

loeve,

Wow! I bet one would ponder many mysteries gazing closely at that face for a few hours. To me, it seems somehow more complicated than a real human face. Odd.
