HIGHlarious!
Posted by: kwan ()

My friend whom I played music with in the '70s just posted these ancient pictures of us on Facebook, from 1979. I didn't have any photos from that period, and hadn't seen these until now, so it was so much fun -- brought back a flood of memories. We were in an avant garde jazz group called Laughing Moon, and we had some wild and crazy adventures together.

In the first pic we're doing a gig on Halloween, and truth-be-told, I think we were all tripping.

This one's the same year, different event. A little more demure, lol!

Finally, I can't resist sharing this one, with me playing the sax:

Yes, in fact I'm doing one this year... but I definitely won't be tripping this time.

Vinny--
The only thing I get high on these days is juice, and right now it's lemonade; today is my 9th day fasting on diluted lemonade and spring water. Beats the toxic stuff anyday!

Lightform-- I just fast until I really feel like I've just gotta eat again, or until I really don't enjoy it (a good sign, unless I'm water fasting, which requires perseverence), or I quit because of circumstances like extreme cold or a heavy work load.

La Veronique-- Ahhh, I wish I could say I was a great sax player. I didn't play it well back in the day, and I've tried to start it up again twice in recent years. Last year my friend lent me his soprano to practice on, and I was getting pretty good and was really excited about finally playing sax.... and then he needed it back. It costs a lot to buy a really good sax, so I don't have one right now, but I'm hoping in the foreseeable future to buy a good one and finally realize my dream of doubling on sax and flute again.

kwan,
That is amazing you are 9 days into a lemonade fast.
I guess it sure does beat the toxic stuff.

Eaglefly--
Today (day 10) I'm still energetic, but I'm noticing some detox symptoms, I look like hell, and I feel a bit 'under the weather.' Sometimes fasting ain't pretty! So I'm taking it a little easy today and only went out to do errands rather than going to the gym and taking my usual long walk. I'm sitting here in my pajamas, sipping a kombumcha drink to help along the alkalization process. Glad I didn't have to work today-- I plan to be in rare form again by the weekend when I have to work outdoors for an afternoon and an evening.

hi kwan

i don't know a lot about sax
except that it sounds kind of deep
i remember there was this guy at the park
and he was so exceptional in the sax
and he played " I'll take the A train"
and " Caravan"

I like "Caravan" it sounds haunting though
even though it has that little lilt in the second piece
and everything is jovial
at the beginning though, it sounds like the name
it sounds like a gypsy caravan trundling through

i like the sound of trumpet too
music is so beautiful

Yeah LaV ! it is eh smiling smiley

Kwan
I know you have heaps of experience in fasting, but how do you determine when is too much. Like, can't you end up doing damage if your body starts consuming the good stuff to support itself in the case of malnourishment ?

I'd like to know what you know in this regards, because I have no experience in it and understand how awesome a practice it can be if you understand what you are doing.

LaV--
I love 'A Train.' Haven't learned 'Caravan' yet. Most of the time I play Jobim bossa novas, like Desafinado and How Insensitive-- beautiful Latin jazz ballads that work really well for the flute.

Lightform--
How do I know when to stop fasting? I usually quit for one of these reasons: a) I lose interest, and then I know it probably wasn't the right time to do it in the first place... or b) I have a successful fast, and at some point I experience true hunger, and I know it's time to stop. Alternately, I often am forced to stop because c) an event comes up that requires me to stop for practical reasons. For instance,it occurred to me that if I'm still fasting later this month I may have to quit before the 28th, because I have to do a 4 hour music gig on that date, and I'm not sure I could go through with it while fasting.

LaV--
Oh goody, you mean there's a Jobim tune I don't know yet? Haven't done Waters of March, probably because I couldn't find a backing track for it. Or maybe I couldn't find it in the Real Book. Will give it a listen! Yes, Meditation is one of my favorite Jobim tunes-- gorgeous.
