Sand & Stone.

Date: March 08, 2011 11:27PM A story tells how two friends
were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, ...and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE." They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one, who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After the friend recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE." The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?" The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it." Write your hurts in sand,Write your joy in stone. (I didnt author this, Im not sure who did, I just heard it a long time ago and it popped up) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changing ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life? Re: Sand & Stone.

Date: March 10, 2011 11:00PM It's nice...BUT (sorry) I know people who are sooo forgiving and keep getting slapped in the face. It actually happened to me, too. And you get to a point where it's not good to say: "Thank you, sir, may I have another?" Re: Sand & Stone.

Date: March 10, 2011 11:46PM of course, but what ive noticed is the people who continue to do such things for no reason, are people who will not make any attempt to pull you from the mire, so are really not true friends... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Date: March 10, 2011 11:46PM To clarify: Allowing others to abuse us is not good for us, but also not for them. There is a saying that we teach others how to treat us by what we allow. Or: "There are no victims--only volunteers." Re: Sand & Stone.

Date: March 11, 2011 12:00AM Oh yes, quite so, but I do not feel that is what the story was relating, it could just be a difference in perception, I look at it as something that happens randomly during specifically difficult parts of life, everyone, even the most loving of individuals, accidentally does something hurtful to the people they love at least once in life... I think the point of the story is to illustrate that one should not dwell on those moments, but on the moments where your friends show they truly love you... it is not saying to allow abuse either I do not think, although it could be more clear on that... but to not let the little things (in this case a one time slap through their whole journey in the desert) define your friendship, especially when a person is willing to risk their life to save yours...
If the person had repeatedly slapped him every couple of miles in the story for no good reason, then id agree with your initial perception of it, I think everyone will agree allowing a pattern of abuse to continue is definitely wrong...even mild abuse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Date: March 11, 2011 01:00AM I didn't mean to diminish the positive message, by the way. I understood what you meant. I also know people who would read this and feel that they must endure even more abuse from people who supposedly "love" them. There are so many mistaken beliefs about what we are supposed to allow in the name of love or friendship and I just wanted to put it out there that people who consistenly demean or devalue you should not be given that opportunity and that you can cut them loose if need be.
