A friend forwarded this to me, I thought it looked interesting if a bit pricey. What do you think?

Eh, there is structural and thermal engineering involved; you can't put a price on safety and efficiency. Well, you can put a price on efficiency smiling smiley

i think they are very nifty smiling smiley especially the height, if you want to grow something that you can't get in a dwarf variety smiling smiley

im having a hard time wrapping my head around how he pulled it off for $500 tho .. the concrete and 2x4's here would be triple that for a 40' dome .. i suppose he could have been using reclamed wood tho

still the plastic is expensive too unless you can reclaim that as well

bookmarked it anyways smiling smiley for future thoughts

i think ive finally convinced my fatherinlaw to let me put up a (removable portable) hoop house this next year ... maybe i should show him this and watch his head explode grinning smiley *le-sigh*

Jgunn,
Yes, that is the simplest. least expensive hoop house I have found to build too.

Others,
Covering domes are not an efficient use of materials (sometimes there is a lot of waste). I prefer longer lasting polycarbonate plastic than short lasting greenhouse film plastic. There is a company that has a glass and aluminum dome greenhouse in the UK but it is really expensive. I like it though because I prefer not to use plastics.

vermontnl,

I was wondering about this myself: that film is fine for an arid climate, but where the weather even in summer can feature lashing rains, high winds, and hail, it would last long. Thanks for the suggestion.

yes Vermontnl this too is my conumdrum .. i dont like the flimsy plastic .. it doesnt last long up here .... this is where a more permanent solution would be ideal

unfortunately the cost is sooo prohibitive at the onset

In Newfoundland where some people do not have a lot of money, people just build simple glass houses with old windows for greenhouses. It works great, is inexpensive, can withstand the winds and rain.

Some of them have plywood for the bottom, glass on top and roof. One can stand when growing seedlings (on a shelf) and put them lower to the ground as the plant grows taller.

Here are two examples of recycled window glasshouses:

But these must be in the interior of Newfoundland, no?

That kind of greenhouse exists everywhere, I see them here in Ontario and there was one on our property in the BC interior. I just don't know how efficient they are, I'll have to look into it.

Jodi, nice hooper.

BananaWho, I've got schematics for a yurt somewhere... they take a lot of felted wool though.

yes mostly interior. On the coast itself I have seen more plastic. I have some heavy duty windows that I made a cold frame with so it is low to the ground but great for the seedlings and greens. I am using polycarbonate for higher structures because where I am in Newfoundland we have 'Wreckhouse' winds, 160kmh, 100mph gusts all too often sometimes carrying salt, sand, and little rocks.

There is a whole language with various dialects (almost each community has its own): it's called Newfoundnese. I pick it up real good when I am there; loose it when I got back to the States. And many like to 'torment' (joke about sex). Some are hoping to get a little 'skin', or maybe do a little 'grassin''. Maybe it's because I am a single woman they 'carry on'.
