Date: February 09, 2012 08:37PM 2012 to 2014 is a great time to journey north to see fantastic sky shows. Here's some info I've gathered:
[apod.nasa.gov] Fairbanks is a favorite destination for aurora borealis fans. The most intense auroras are caused by solar storms, flares associated with sunspots. When solar activity peaks is the best time. It will be good over the next couple of years. The absolute best time is when a massive solar flare explodes and heads toward Earth. Then you have a couple of days to get to Fairbanks to see it arrive. [fairbanks-alaska.com] Here's Space Weather: [www.swpc.noaa.gov] Aurora Forecast: [www.gi.alaska.edu] For Flare prediction: [www.solarmonitor.org] First sunspot of current cycle in 2008, with 11 year cycle we are just ramping up: [sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] The next few years is an excellent time to go see the northern lights. Date: April 17, 2012 10:45AM I've only seen them once here (Calgary) overhead in the last 24 years. I keep tabs on what the sun is doing and the "aurora forecast". Most days when they say would should see them, there are cloudy skies.
Lyrid meteor shower is starting. Best viewing is this Saturday night/into Sunday morning. I know, I'm a nerd. I even wave at the space station when its making a pass. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
