What stops you from having solar panels installed on your house?

Date: December 28, 2013 11:33PM I was wondering this about myself today. Just moved into my first house 2 months ago and have given little thought to solar, but I'm not sure why. The federal govt. provides a 30% tax break on all installations along with many other incentives at the state level. Utilities are also required to buy a certain amount of surplus energy from solar people. I think I'm going to start looking into this. Are there any glaring drawbacks that I should be made aware of? Date: December 30, 2013 01:13PM First off, I guess your new home is connected to the grid. So, the programs involve putting up solar panels on your south facing roof or on a tracker (a moveable frame that the panels are mounted on on the ground.) You must have a smart meter (I think 2, one for power you generate, one for power you use. Some companies have fancy meters that do both in one.) These meters do emit I believe electro-magnetic frequencies.
In my opinion, these programs are a way to hook on it and at some point later we will be taxed more to be on these programs. The power companies and states still want to make money. I have seen this happen here in Vermont, changes to laws such that it may not be as advantageous as it might seem now. I decided just to set part of my house up off the grid. But this entails batteries (the weak link in alternative systems until battery technology improves tremedously.) And I don't use a lot of power. Also you must check to see if you (or your property - very important to know if you plan to sell your home at some point) is responsible for the maintainence of these panels in the long run and any issues with insurance for breakage, etc. And how long is the expected lifespan of the system. That's all I can think of at the moment except to say getting off the grid and getting independent is best with small scale systems. That is a way to help the planet and people instead of mega-corps and those that try and control. Peace Re: What stops you from having solar panels installed on your house?

John, thanks for the link to the Alex Jones' Solar Panel articles. The one about paint replacing solar panels is interesting. We use StartPage sometimes, too. I guess we should use it all the time. Re: What stops you from having solar panels installed on your house?
