According to the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" fuel cell technology is a "distraction" so that car companies won;t have to release electric battery cars and will still have to use gasoline until fuel cells are ready. I think REEVs (Range Extended Electric vehicles) will become the next "hot" (trendy) and feasible (real) thing. Here is a link: [gliving.tv]

I think if you look at the entire lifetime emissions of fuel cell cars, from construction to disposal, they are not the best option for the environment, even if they do only emit water vapor as they are being driven around.

This is roughly what I mean

Some reasons why biofuel is NOT the answer [physorg.com]

It doesn't even mention the fact that biofuels also place increased pressure on commodity crop prices, since biofuels and normal food crops are in competition for land, thus worsening the condition of billions of poor people around the world who depend on such food and which can't afford it. Crop inflation has skyrocketed in the last couple of years from the decreased supply of crops due to the increased demand on land place by biofuel production.

i still think that car that runs on compressed air is the best. sounds too good to be true, i know, but it is!

Hey coco,

The air car idea is good because it doesn't have any polluting emissions in situ (it actually purifies the air!), and also because the "fuel" is so plentiful and cheap, but in terms of energy efficiency, it's not great since it requires a lot of energy to pump into the pressurized canister containing the air, and there are a lots of losses. An electric car is more efficient from an energy point of view, thus reducing total energy consumption. A good idea though that deserves more investment I think.

how can that be though, they say it only takes 5 minutes to fill the tank!

i want a car that runs on just pure THOUGHT

fortunately i do own one

its the new MPOG X81000 the acronym stands for the highest natural human transportation technology known to human kind ( My Pair Of Legs)

they work very well

wherever i direct it

they go

high mileage too

Hey coco,

it does only take a few minutes when refilled by a commercial air pump, but bear in mind that those machines use up a lot of energy compressing the air into the storage tank in the car. The system as a whole is less efficient than electric batteries and much more so than gasoline. Although the technology can always improve with more investment, right now it is worse for the environment to use an air car than a similar sized gasoline car. If one used only renewable energy to fill up the tank then it would be totally clean, but it would still waste a relatively large amount of energy when compared to other options.

Quote

Environmentalists are also wary about the Air Car's claimed benefits. Converting energy from electricity to compressed air is inefficient, according to Karsten Krause of the European Federation for Transport and Environment, a green lobby group based in Brussels.

By consuming much more energy from the power plant than it delivers on the road, Krause said, it could even do as much environmental damage as some gasoline cars.

"You may not have any pollution from the car itself," he said, "but you're just transferring the environmental burden to another place."

Krause's organization pushes a much simpler recipe for cutting greenhouse gas and toxic emissions from vehicles. If consumers ditched their SUVs and four-liter guzzlers and chose engine capacities reflecting their real needs, he said, fuel consumption would drop by a third.

Like the article asays, what the air car does is transfer the pollution away from the car itself and to the power station which generates the electricity that drives the air compressor that fill up the tank.

J

Well, it seems they've been working on air car technology. This latest one is a hybrid air car that gets over 100mpg [zeropollutionmotors.us]

Quote

We estimate the cost of purchasing a six-seater, 75hp Air Car will be approximately $17,800, proving that buying “green” doesn’t have to cost more. Not only is the price amazingly affordable, but it will cost you up to five times less in fuel consumption than an equivalent gasoline powered car. The Air Car is a totally new breed of cars entirely conceived to achieve low prices:

Ingenious design. The car’s modular, advanced materials and manufacturing techniques simplify manufacture.

No dealer’s = no middleman costs. In our business model, your Air Car is delivered to you directly from the local/regional factory, eliminating any dealer mark-up and shipping costs.

Low fuel costs. You can get an equivalent of 106 MPG. It can cost as little as $2 to refill your tank with air.

Simple maintenance. All parts will be supplied by the manufacturer to a network of licensed repair shops that will simply replace defective parts. It is easy, fast and first class since all parts are new.

Reduced maintenance anyway. The Air Car requires no cooling circuit and uses no hot gases.

No combustion = no residues. An oil change is only necessary every 31,000 miles!

It seems quite affordable and an improvement on mileage and overall practicality. Should help quite a lot in reducing air pollution, but still not so great when considering climate change implications, since the energy required to pump it up is still coming from the main grid and the inefficiencies are still there in part. Coming over to the US in 2009.

Pretty good stuff though.

Cheers,
J

There are free plans available that show how to do it yourself cheap and easy run on water. There was or maybe still is a yahoo group called radiant_H2o that posted them.

The John Bedini system works too.
