Watermelon craze!
Posted by: cocoa_nibs ()
Date: May 18, 2008 04:35AM

For the last few weeks I have been on a wild watermelon trip. Most every morning (and night!) I eat a large half water melon. I eat other things as well (other fresh fruit, veggies, sprouts, some dried fruit, avocado, some cooked items, like steamed veggies, beans/lentils, rice or potato).
I make sure I eat it separately from other food.

What's that craving? Any ideas? Should I be concerned about the sugar overload? Or the cooling properties of the fruit?

Any advice much appreciated.

Boy, the are SO good!! Crunch, slurp....

The craving is your body recognizing excellent food. If I had fresh ripe watermelon right now, I too would be indulging in watermelon in every meal. Assuming your fat intake isn't too high (say over 20%), eating watermelon all the time will be not be a problem.

Some people here (myself, definitely) find they go through intense periods of food craving. I think it has something to do with your body just needing whatever is in that particular food, and then basking in the nutritious glory. Coconuts are a popular fling.

It's like you are possessed by the fruit. >8)

If it feels good, it is whole, unprocessed, and fresh, go nuts!

we've got the sweetest little thai watermelons and honeydew melons in season right now on maui... i've been juicing a whole one or the other rind and all each day. YUM!

the watermelon is delish, but the honeydew juiced is just ridiculously good.

The new season started here a couple of weeks ago. Yum! I'm not much of a mono eater but I make an exception for watermelon.

I can't find cheap ones though. The best I've found so far is $4 for a medium-large.

I don't think there's anything wrong with craving watermelon and eating it every single day! I eat watermelon almost daily in the summer. Sometimes that's all I eat for a day. Or 2, or 3....or more.. smiling smiley

watermelon is prob the only food that
in and of itself (flesh, rind and seeds)
has the perfect ratio of p-c-f

i have confessed many times here
living extremely well for 5-6 months of the past 10 years
on 99.9% watermelon

one summer i had a broken foot and even PAID someone
to bring it winking smiley

especially good for the biceps, btw

I've been known to eat a whole watermelon for breakfast during the summer. Granted they are only slightly larger than a bowling ball. I did that every day for two and a half months when I was living in southern Italy. The people in the market place thought I was quite bizarre. I would walk to the piazza day after day with a spoon in my pocket for my morning fix. I'd buy, crack it on the curb and dig in while sitting on the side-walk. Very good melon ... very good memories.

They taste real good that way too. Challenge to find that much room in the fridge. Luckily its never needed for long, g!

I like that they come with the bowl built in... smiling smiley All I need is a spoon

I eat all the red part of the watermelon and the white part I juice it.
Question:Can I eat the skin? Anyone have done it?

I find fruit has a different taste sensation if it is room temp than when it is in the fridge. Depending on the fruit and what I am looking for is how I keep the fruit. I tend to like things like kiwis, cataloupes, and strawberries room temp. Watermelons sometimes chilled and others room temp. Actually strawberries are quite delicious when I pick the sunshine warm.

just to clarify

i've eaten it 99% of my diet for 5-6 months every year
for the past 10 years
not 5-6 months of the past 10 years

also as a whole food, either juicing the rind and seeds
or chewing them well.
the flesh alone as far as i know is not the optimum
ratio of p-c-f for long term mono-ing

enjoy the bliss!!!

I just spent $6 for a basketball sized seedless one.
I will make them a staple this summer.
I used a melon baller and filled up 5 tuperware containers.
So refreshing!

Watermelon is exactly what I'm craving right now, especially after having a really good one yesterday - following two duds.

Mmmm I'm actually planning on how to get more watermelon right now. Mm mm mmmm!!!!

Good for the biceps? That's very interesting, because the day or eating the afore mentioned lush watermelon - I carried a heavy one year old for most of the day and felt my arms twitching in the evening, then I had a watermelon dinner followed by a watermelon breakfast and no more bicep twitching! hah, there may be some truth in that then ; )

Should not fruit be limited to 15 percent of our daily diet, even if it is watermelon [www.youtube.com]

He says some stuff that is wrong. The difference in sugar amounts of wild v. cultivated fruits is not 28-40x. It is not even twice as much. Maybe 20% more at most.

The biggest difference is the types of sugars that are present. In the cultivated ones, there is more fructose and sucrose and less glucose, which makes them taste sweeter.

sucrose = fructose + glucose in a link

fructose is sweeter than glucose.

Also modern cultivars are lower in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, protective phytochemicals, and essential fatty acids than wild types.

Our fellow primates, especially the ones closest related to us, eat 60-90% fruit depending on availability, fruit being the #1 preference... :O

15%? I think with raw, you either get the bulk of your calories from fruit or fat, since greens and veggies are extremely low calorie. I prefer to get my calories from fruit, it makes me feel better. smiling smiley Hope this helps.

I revisited this thread because I just got smacked with a huge watermelon craving, too. Today was the first day it's been hotter than 80F, and all day I was feeling dehydrated, and pretty grossed out and unwholesome from even heavier fruits like pears and mangos. It was one of those mornings where I woke up feeling too hot and parched, which affects my stomach sometimes.

Then it occurred to me: I should get a watermelon! =D

They are so light and refreshing!! Now that it's heating up, melons seem so much more appealing (and they're in abundance on sale!!).

Bryan, why should melons be avoided if you are eating more than 20% fat?

$6 here for a big one - I am stuck on juicing them now. The checkout guy said he wasn't worried about me getting mugged in the parking lot because it was so heavy I could knock someone out with it smiling smiley

I have watermelon for lunch probably 3-5 times a week. A small seedless one here is only maybe $2.99 so they're very convenient and affordable. I just slip one into my lunchbag (hello kitty ^_^ ) along with a knife and spoon and head off to work. Everyone is always envious of me because they smell so good, much better than their fast-food burgers or frozen meals, anyway. Watermelon makes me happy!
